Sisters are doing it for themselves at the 2011 American Music Awards! The AMAs are back, and the top prize for Artist Of The Year features only one guy — that would be Lil Wayne — while the other slots are reserved for pop’s leading ladies: Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Adele, who leads with four nominations. Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Chris Brown and The Throne are also among the nominees — check out the full list below!
The nominations were announced this morning by Nicki Minaj and Pitbull in downtown LA. The Cuban club rapper was also revealed to be one of the show’s performers, along with Katy Perry. More performers will be announced in the coming weeks. Hopefully Adele’s voice returns by the time the show airs on November 20 on ABC.
Some thoughts:
:: Is it just us, or is Pop and Rock two completely different genres that shouldn’t be combined?
:: We find it hard to believe that OneRepublic had a big enough year to warrant a nomination in Pop/Rock Band, Duo or Group. Can you name any song they released this year?
:: This is the second year in a row that Katy Perry is up for Artist Of The Year, and the third year in a row for Lady Gaga. Taylor Swift won the honor back in 2009.
:: Rihanna and Chris Brown are vying for the same award for Soul/R&B album. Good think RiRi doesn’t hold a grudge anymore!
:: Just how is Katy Perry considered “Adult Contemporary”?
:: Beyonce is up against her Destiny’s Child sister Kelly Rowland for Favorite Female Soul/R&B Artist. Once again, another way for Michelle Williams to feel left out.
