Lana Del Rey is 2012’s buzziest artist you need to know, and the world is going to make sure you do whether you like it or not — the subdued “Video Games” artist will be all over your TV set in the next few weeks, including tomorrow night on Saturday Night Live, and she makes her debut appearance on the cover of this week’s Billboard.

Chances are you may have already been well aware of Lana, particularly if you’re prone to pick up on what the Internet is both celebrating and ridiculing simultaneously. The Lake Placid-born singer has been the subject of derision since she first appeared, with critical music fans questioning her metamorphosis from Lizzy Grant (her birth name) to the Del Rey of today.

“My intention was never to transform into a different person,” she says. “What other people think of me is none of my business. Sometimes, it hurts my feelings. But I have to just keep going. The good stuff is really good. Some of the other stuff is difficult, but I’ll be able to tour now, probably sing for a while. That’s nice for me.”

“The good thing is that the record is beautiful,” Lana says of her debut album Born To Die (out January 31). “And I get to do so many things that I love… and finally, I don’t have to make my videos by myself anymore. Thank God. It’s embarrassing. I’m just going to get help in all the right ways.”
