Madonna has always been one of pop’s most colorful figures, which is something that’s quite evident with the cover art for MDNA, her upcoming 12th studio LP (out March 26). Here the prolific Material Girl is shown through the prism of what looks like a multi-hued gem. With her blonde locks pulled back and head slightly tilted to the side, there’s almost a hint of the cover of Madge’s classic 1986 LP True Blue.
In looking back on Madonna’s album covers since the turn of the millennium, the singer has worn quite a few coats — something we’ve come to expect.
With 2000′s Music, a denim-and-cowboy-hat-clad M posed in front of a vintage car. Here she was Americana incarnate, a persona she’d turn on its head with politically-tinged 2003 release American Life. Madge got a spanking by US radio (read: she was virtually banned on the airwaves) for her so-called anti-American sentiments on the album, so Confessions On A Dancefloor found her heading straight to the disco in 2005 — a return to her roots, if you will. Appropriately, the cover art had Her Madgesty on her knees, bathing in the strobes and glitterball shimmer.
And then there was 2008′s Hard Candy, the cover of which depicted the sticky and sweet singer looking, let’s face it, rather hard herself in her leather boxing dominatrix gear amidst some questionable Photoshop work.
MDNA seems to symbolize exactly how we’ve collectively viewed pop’s reigning queen since she came roaring into our consciousness nearly 30 years ago — from many angles. We’ve dissected her to death and probably projected our own persona onto her at times.
Yes, she may have bounced and writhed through different shades of the color spectrum over the decades. But in the end, one thing remains crystal clear: she always is and always will be uniquely Madonna.

It’s alright I guess. Nothing special about it. It looks kind of confusing and distracting. I was expecting something more fierce or edgy.

I think this M.D.N.A album cover is stunning!!!!!! its very fresh. I don’t know if its an original idea or if it has been done before, but it’s very fresh and very now…. I don’t think the photoshop image is an issue because Madonna is not just a pop legend but a business woman so she is using the latest technology to get her point across which is fine by me. Let’s just hope the music sounds as great as the cover looks!!!!!!!!!!
This is not the album cover. This is the special edition cover, not the standard album. So we’ll have to wait for the album cover…

Awesome!My husband’s family was once good friends with Mark Sellers who won Star Search dancing with his sister and continued to be a Solid Gold dancer and do many Michael Jackson videos. I hope he’s busting a relocate honor of Don today.
This is a great cover, but it is for the Deluxe Edition…can’t wait to see the Standard Edition! And fyi, Madonna is NOT the ONLY celebrity who is photoshopped! Almost EVERYTHING we see in print is photoshopped! It’s called ADVERTISING, people!
But yeah, this is a wonderfully designed album cover….very modern. Madonna still causin’ a commotion after all these years…the sign of a TRUE ICON!
Hello! I don’t quite understand just why the author of this article didn’t have any comments about ALL of Madonna’s album covers? Perhaps a word limit was required? I had a feeling that the cover for “MDNA” wouldn’t be revealed anywhere on the World Wide Web and this article confirms that. I’m also sorry that the above rainbow-coloured album cover isn’t the standard album cover for MDNA. I do hope that the Material Girl makes up for this by having even better artwork for the standard studio album.
I like the album but yeah the cover looks more like Kylie from her X album/tour days.
