Though Katy Perry’s live performances of “Part of Me” have featured her looking like some kind of futuristic gladiator, the video for this Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection single is giving us more of a G.I. Jane look (as we spotted in the preview). Someone must have told Katy that bright blue hair is hard to camouflage, because here we see her chop off her black locks and enlist in the Marines after a philandering ex breaks her heart. Apparently the part of her that we’re never gonna ever take away from her is a machine gun! (We certainly don’t intend to try taking it away, though.) Drop below and give us 20, then watch Katy Perry’s patriotic “Part of Me” video.

Color us surprised — but we think this storyline works pretty well with the message of the song, even if it’s hardly what we imagined from a single that plays mostly like a kiss-off to soon-to-be ex-husband Russell Brand. The lyrics are meant to be empowering, and there is something inspiring about Katy striving to make a positive difference in the world after her heartbreak rather than crumple into a heap of tears. Plus, how often do you get to see a pop diva go through boot camp?

Do you think Katy Perry’s military look matches the message behind “Part Of Me” the song? Tell us in the comments below, or on Twitter and Facebook.
