Today (June 1) would have been the 86th birthday of Marilyn Monroe, and modern day pop icon Lady Gaga paid tribute to the star by snapping a pic while dressed in her iconic blonde curls. “#HappyBirthdayMarilyn,” tweeted Gaga from a hotel room in Asia. “They’ll never take our blonde hair and lipstick.”

Monroe, who was born Norma Jean Mortensen Baker on June 1, 1926, has remained popular even 50 years after her death, though her image and life has had an even greater resurgence in the last year. Michelle Williams won a Golden Globe and scored an Oscar nomination for portraying Monroe in the independent film My Week With Marilyn, and the singer/actress’ life inspired the musical developed in the NBC show Smash. Katy Perry was rumored to star in a real-life Marilyn musical, and Nicki Minaj included a song called “Marilyn Monroe” on her new album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, and it was covered by the PS 22 chorus in honor of the star’s birthday. Watch it below.

Marilyn Monroe’s relevance in pop culture is only going to grow as the year goes on — The Hollywood Reporter has learned that a “live” concert featuring a hologram of the movie star is in development. The show, which hopes to take place before the end of 2012, has a working title of Virtual Marilyn Live — A Musical Celebration of the Birth of the Pop Icon. Oh, what hath Tupac’s hologram wrought?
