Known for turning bad break ups into pop hits, it’s clear Kelly Clarkson really cares about her songwriting and has even said that she calls her “babies.” So it was surprising to find out that “Tell Me A Lie,” off of One Direction‘s debut record, Up All Night, was penned by the “Dark Side” singer.

“Tell Me A Lie is the cut I’ve got on 1D’s album as I like the story of them, how they came together as a group,” Clarkson wrote for the UK’S The Daily Star when she served as guest editor. “While I wrote the song for me, it didn’t fit in the current album as I never want an album to sound like one thought.”

She went on to talk about One Direction’s success in the US and how their “innocence” could be a big draw. (Possibly more of an attraction for mom’s who have young daughters who are in love with these guys.) She also gives props to the talent across the pond, pointing out some of her favorite acts at the moment.

“There’s a lot of British talent doing well in America right now. I’m a huge fan of Ellie Goulding and Jessie J.”
