When all is said and done, will we be throwing Rock Of Ages onto the musical scrap heap that contains such other melodic duds as Glitter, Burlesque and Can’t Stop The Music? It may too soon to tell just yet — but the first-week box office report shows the movie opened with more of a hoarse croak than a fierce howl. The flick, which boasts Tom Cruise, Mary J. Blige and Russell Brand among its cast, closed out Sunday with a weak take of $14,437,269, and limped in at #3 overall (it was trounced by both Madagascar 3 and Prometheus in their second weeks). Considering the movie’s critical slamming (it’s got just 42% on Rotten Tomatoes) and the fact that its production budget was $75 million, it seems like Rock Of Ages might be heading to the big quarry in the sky sooner than Warner Bros. execs would have liked.
