Believe it or not, this October will mark 25 years since George Michael‘s Grammy-winning, hit-spawning debut solo LP Faith was released. And further to that, the singer’s very first single with Wham! saw the light of day on June 29, 1982 — nearly 30 years ago. To celebrate, Michael announced today that he’ll be offering up a new tune, “White Light”, this June 29.
“On the 29th of June this year it will be 30 years to the day that ‘Wham Rap’, my first single, written with Andrew Ridgeley (on an afternoon that the two of us should have been at school!), entered the British charts,” George notes on Facebook.
The British crooner continued, “To celebrate and commemorate those 30 wonderful years I am releasing my most recent song, ‘White Light’, to radio on the exact anniversary of that chart date. Although I know the music industry tradition on such occasions is to list the hundreds of millions of albums sold, the number of records broken and awards received over all those years, I would simply like to say thank you.”
Last year Katy Perry joined George Michael, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and Bruce Springsteen in becoming one of only five artists to achieve six Top 10 singles on the Hot 100 off one LP.
