Need to get pumped up to perform in the biggest athletics competition there is? Or maybe just need to get more enthused about sitting in front of the TV watching them? Then Muse has the ideal torch-carrying track for you! It’s “Survival,” off their upcoming LP The 2nd Law, and it has been chosen as the official theme for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. After hearing it, our guess is you’ll have one of two responses: 1) “Well, of course this was chosen as the theme, it could hardly be more perfect!” or 2) “Hey! How did they get Queen to record a new song for the Olympics?” Hear it below the jump.
With that sweeping intro, screeching electric guitars and lyrics, “It’s a race, but I’m gonna win,” Muse is clearly going for the gold on this one — “Survival” is not for the silver-and-bronze crowd.

Amazing Anthem ideal for short ‘mood setting’ intervals and intro’s – just can’t accept the suitability of the particular lyrics: “I WON’T FORGIVE, the VENGEANCE is mine”
At events for the Olympic Torch around the country the message was contrary the words of this song !
Love Muse but not these words at the Olympics please!
Kind of gives me a headache! I agree “Vengeance is Mine” are not appropriate lyrics. Song sounds like a smorgasbord of stuff: Main lyrics almost sound like Sinatra’s “My Way”, then we have high opera that sounds like it came from a Blockbuster like “Cleopatra” or “The Ten Commandments”. Then there’s the low voice opera that sounds like the demon music from “The Omen”.
Sounds to me like bits and pieces of other songs.
Sorry, but I do not believe this piece will have the “staying power” of many past Olympic Themes such as those composed by John Williams. Someone missed the boat on this one!
This song is terrible.
Terrible song! Contrived and emotionless!
John Williams themes were a million times better
This song is horrendous, sounds like a cross between a Gladiators arena and Hell and everything in between on the same lines – who on earth decided it should represent the Olympics of 2012 – do they not realise that times have changed it is not fight to the death or revenge any more it is friendly competition. I hope it does not put people off actually watching the games and getting behind and supporting their country. Personally i hope i never have to hear it again.
