Ellie Goulding Covers Active Child’s “Hanging On”: Listen
British royal favorite Ellie Goulding is working on her follow-up to her breakout debut Lights, and today we get a hint of the new direction she’ll be taking. The singer released a free download of her cover of Active Child’s single “Hanging On”, and she manages to keep the ethereal wonder present in the original while still making it her own. Utilizing harps and electronic rumbles, Ellie’s gorgeous soprano glides over this fantastical tune before UK rapper Tinie Tempah appears for a verse.
“Here’s the beginning of my new journey,” she tweeted with a link to the song. “Enjoy and share responsibly.” (She soon added: “It is also a free download so please share and enjoy irresponsibly.”) Track below.
As Ellie has hit the studio with “We Found Love” producer Calvin Harris — not to mention all the quality time she’s been spending with dubstep king Skrillex — we wouldn’t be surprised if the rest of her album carried a more club-ready vibe.
