While in North Carolina for The X Factor‘s Greensboro auditions, judges Britney Spears, Demi Lovato and L.A. Reid were stopped by a local news crew for a Q&A session. And interestingly, Britney seemed to completely contradict the new promo ad that Fox ran last night — wherein she was featured spouting out harsh quips to hopefuls in a montage — by saying that she always tries to offer “constructive criticism.”

“You know these people are driving so far out of their way to come in and to perform and put themselves out there,” Spears said during the interview. “It’s really kind of hard to tell some of them no.” Watch above.

Britney certainly didn’t seem to have a tough time dishing out lines like “bad to the bone” and “you definitely don’t have that X factor” to some who auditioned, however, in the mentioned ad. And of course, these observations are coming from an artist who isn’t exactly known for her live-singing prowess.

That said, we might give the songstress the benefit of the doubt and just chalk the commercial for the second season of the show up to being be a product of some tricky out-of-context editing.
