These days, when Lana Del Rey isn’t busy doing nude photo shoots, she’s leaking unreleased tracks. Are they new, are they old, are they appearing on the Born To Die re-release Paradise due out in November? Oh who the hell knows. If we had to guess, “Backfire” is newer material (it’s got the same old “sad girl with an infatuation and a death wish” theme, though!).
This may sound absurd, but the woozy beat built on some drum machine blips, with a lap steel guitar mewling in the background, sounds like a half-formed idea from Kanye‘s 808s & Heartbreak sessions. Lana’s voice here sounds effortless and (mainly) free of affectation. Even better, she barely uses that schmaltzy fake orchestra. Hurry up and hear the song below, before it gets taken down.
