We haven’t even recovered yet from the release of One Direction‘s latest pop anthem “Live While We’re Young” (and its accompanying wet t-shirt contest video), and there’s already news about another 1D single coming down the pike. Acoustic pop strummer Ed Sheeran, whose breakout single “The A Team” won him critical acclaim in his native United Kingdom, spilled to MTV News that he’s written two songs on 1D’s new album Take Me Home — and one will likely feature as a single.

“One of them is kind of a getting-back together song. One of them is an appreciation song,” he said. “I can’t say the titles. The song that I think will be the single, one of the singles, is kind of a very sweet song.” Read on for more details about the collaboration.

News broke earlier this summer that Sheeran was working with One Direction on their new album. An initial report claimed that 1D’s next single would be penned by Sheeran and titled “Heartbreaker,” although a Sony rep later denied that info. Sheeran told MTV that all the songs 1D has recorded, including the Sheeran-written ballad “Moments” from their debut Up All Night, were penned when he was 17: “The two songs that I wrote for One Direction’s album are, they’re the same subject matter as the last song I wrote for the last album ’cause they’re from the same batch of songs,” Sheeran said. “They’re both about my ex-girlfriend.”

With Sheeran due to collaborate with Taylor Swift on her upcoming Red LP, and his own single “The A Team” steadily climbing up the Hot 100, it’s entirely possible that Britain’s beloved songwriting prodigy will be dominating radio on this side of the pond before the year is over.
