What happens when Carrie Underwood fixes her phenomenal vocal talents on one of the weepiest songs ever? Let’s just say that we’ve got a new ugly-crying soundtrack to last us through the holidays.

In anticipation of Underwood’s upcoming VH1 Unplugged special, which airs next Sunday at 4 p.m. on VH1.com and 7 p.m. on the network, Underwood is teasing one of the performances from the stripped-down, intimate set. Here, she puts her stamp on Coldplay‘s oft-covered ballad “Fix You,” explaining that she was flirting with Anglophilia after having a great experience on the other side of the pond. Read on for all the details.

“We went to London not too long ago,” she explains, “and we really wanted to do something from their own backyard. We wanted to pay tribute, because they were so nice to welcome us there, and they have so much talent…I got to see these guys in concert not too long ago, too, and it just made sense. We wanted to do a cover, and we wanted to do something a little bit different.”

Underwood puts a country stamp on the track but leaves its essence unchanged — it’s still the same old heart-wrenching song. And, of course, she kills the vocal delivery. Not that we’re surprised.
