Yesterday, the Twittersphere formally exploded as Idolator hosted our second ever Twitter debate, where we debated an important issue facing voters this election season: Is the media too hard on Christina Aguilera? While our own Sam Lansky took the side of the media, debaters far and wide joined the fray to discuss how Aguilera is perceived in the press.
Like any good debate, there was no clear consensus, although a lot of ground was covered — ranging from whether Aguilera brings negative attention upon herself to if her album Bionic is actually a misunderstood masterpiece — but presented below are our 10 favorite tweets from the debate: The good, the bad, and the ugly. Head after the jump to see them all, then check out the #xtinadebate tag on Twitter to see the full dialogue.
@samlansky Why do you think anyone would be a Christina fan in 2012 when everything she does ‘well’ is done better by others? #xtinadebate

@samlansky @idolator What’s wrong with being confident? if she wasn’t that confident the industry would eat her alive. And she’s NOT mean. — MΛDI (@MadiFierce) October 30, 2012

@samlansky @idolator I think people are too hard on @therealxtina just for being real and blunt.

@idolator Bionic was misunderstood, self-indulgent, overblown, messy, and embarrassing, with moments of sublime greatness. #xtinadebate

Question of the day
Who won the #XtinaDebate?
RESULTS:
- Team Xtina (85%, 137 Votes)
- Idolator's Sam Lansky (15%, 25 Votes)
Total Voters: 162

Umm… I don’t even know what the hell happened. In the end, Xtina will be crying all the way to the bank, with you all (haters or not) obnoxiously promoting her and her upcoming album on twitter.

Pipe, obviously you haven’t listened to anything of hers outside the singles. She used bionic to display a whole new side of her vocals. In fact, Linda Perry, whom she’s worked with for a very long time, told her to quit oversinging. She got her moments to belt on Bionic, but she also learned a little more control. Listen to “I Am” when she enunciates more than usual. In “Birds of Prey” on the Deluxe Edition she utilizes the deeper baritone parts of her range.
And I’d say she’s evolved greatly from 2002. Even when Stripped came out she was still being tugged around by producers telling her how to sing and what to do because she was still relatively new to the industry. That’s partly why she ended up with Justin Timberlake for the Stripped/Justified tour (I was there for that concert…JT was horrible.) She’s learned her lesson and knows how to keep things on her end of the court for the most part, which is why she’s sometimes perceived as a bitch. Just because the media loves running negative stories on her doesn’t mean they’ve “eaten her up.” She doesn’t care what they say because she’s proud of herself and her work regardless of the nasty negativity the media fires at strong, opinionated women like her. That is an evolution, if I ever did see one myself.
I’m from Mexico and Christina used to be really popular over here, I can even say I used to be a big fan of her work. I have all her albums so yes I’ve listened to her non-singles tracks and actually “I Am” is one one my favorite songs :) and the collab she made with P. Diddy(Tell Me) is also really good, but other than that it’s really hard to think of any other songs were she’s in control of her voice.
And who said anything about Media? (BTW the Media loves running negative on everyone) I was talking about Music Industry in general. Which she doesn’t seem to quite get.
She has a very unique voice but it’s not really necesary to show it off on every single song. But for some reason she feels like she has to, even though that has taking her nowhere.
Her BIG ego and bad managment made Bionic the big flop it was. To start off with “Not Myself Tonight” as her first single with a video that was very Gaga/Madonna like was very wrong idea. In my opinion “Bionic” or maybe even “Primma Donna”(with a very good video) would’ve been better choices.
But as I said before, I’ll have to wait until her new album comes out..
