Even though we know that we’ll be hearing Mariah Carey‘s seminal “All I Want For Christmas Is You” pretty much nonstop for the next month, the magic of the song’s sublime euphoria hasn’t totally worn off yet — and our enthusiasm for it is officially renewed by Carey’s deliriously fun version of the song performed live last night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, with assistance from Fallon himself, The Roots and a children’s chorus. Scientifically, those elements all that’s required to make a person say “Aww.”
But the pared-down, island-lite production in this version, eclectic as it is, reveals the keenness of the songcraft (we always forget that Carey wrote the lyrics and melody to “All I Want For Christmas Is You” herself, incredibly), and Carey’s vocals remain on-point. Good luck finding a more charming Christmas song this season. Watch up top.
