When The Ready Set (that’s Jordan Mark Witzigreuter, for the uninitiated) wrote “For the Better,” a song inspired by Taylor Swift‘s very public breakup with Harry Styles, he had no idea it would end up making its way to her: “I thought it would be fun to write from an outside perspective,” he says. “I didn’t want to be mean or snarky — people focus on the sad part. I did it in half an hour.” But then his fans rallied to get the singer’s attention: “My fans are amazing,” Jordan says. “With word of mouth, it spread very fast. But I didn’t expect her to respond.”

But lo and behold, the ever-elusive Swift sent Jordan a Twitter response — a simple “:) :) :)” — and the clip went even more viral. A sweet, jaunty tune celebrating the lighter side of the breakup — “They say you’ll probably write him a song / Five times platinum, I doubt if they’re wrong — “For the Better” turns all the gloomy drama of the relationship’s demise into something quite chipper. And now, Idolator is offering an exclusive free download of the tune, which you’ll enjoy even more knowing that it’s Swift-approved.
