So, a revelation: We really love this new Mariah Carey song. After the lackluster “Triumphant (Get ‘Em)” and the slightly curious patriotic anthem “Bring It On Home,” our expectations for this next round from Mimi weren’t high — but “Almost Home” more than delivers, even if it doesn’t totally reinvent the wheel.
The Stargate-produced tune has an unassuming rhythmic track with some nice twinkly synths on the chorus, but those signature vocal riffs are what really does the trick — her vocals sound controlled and never over-the-top, and (thankfully) the song gives her space to shine, rather than drowning her out with overly robust production or a laundry list of rappers. Especially for a soundtrack offering, “Home” is a worthy new entry into Carey’s catalogue. Listen below.

When I heard the 30 second preview I was so relieved. A different production team, a different sound, and finally, that voice! I thoroughly enjoy the song but have to point out to those saying it’s a little middle of the road, it’s for a Disney soundtrack. It’s not going to be a signature Mariah song; that being said, I think it’s great.

OMG this song is ace! It made my day, my week, my month so far! I’ve been waiting for Mariah to sing like this again since the emancipation of mimi! Her voice belongs loud and clear, powerful and chesty like here! Absolutely amaaaaaaaaaaaazing work!
