Drake‘s “Started From the Bottom” catalogued his (relatively) humble origins and ascent to the top, but the rapper’s newest track, “5AM In Toronto” is all about, well, being at the top. Dropped without fanfare via Twitter late last night, the track is built on an appropriately sinister Boi-1da produced beat — more compensatory, swaggering Drake than self-pitying, reflective Drake — but still, as always, captures how it’s lonely at the top.
“That’s why every song sounds like Drake featuring Drake,” he reflects. This one sure does — since the beat is ferocious, the lyrics are incisive, and there’s still a pervasive sadness that makes it quintessentially Drizzy. Listen after the jump.
