Miguel & Kendrick Lamar’s “How Many Drinks?” Remix: Listen

In a lot of ways, Kendrick Lamar and Miguel are mirror images, fast-rising counterparts in their respective genres. Both made noise online in early 2012 thanks to material released outside the normal industry process (Miguel with the free Art Dealer Chic EP trilogy, K-Dot with the iTunes-only Section.80). Then both guys honed their craft over the ensuing months, followed by a potent, forward-thinking and incredibly cohesive full-length later in 2012. The similarity isn’t lost on Miguel: when discussing why he enlisted Lamar for the remix of “How Many Drinks?” he said, “Kendrick is poised to be the next staple in hip-hop [and] I certainly intend on becoming that for R&B.”

So now that they’ve joined forces, how does it sound? Pretty good! Miguel’s role is largely unchanged here. In the original version, the singer rapped a simple verse in the bridge. That’s gone, replaced with a low-key Lamar referencing his “Swimming Pools (Drank)” call to dive in it. Both artists are playing the Made in America Festival in Philly at the end of the summer, so we may soon get to see the duo perform this live. OH MAN you guys, this just hit us: what if K-Dot joins Miguel to perform it on SNL this weekend? While you salivate over that possibility, listen to the remix below.
