On Friday night via East Village Radio, producer Mark Ronson premiered — and praised — Beyonce and Andre 3000‘s version of “Back to Black.” While Amy Winehouse‘s original song was a seductive throwback, the Great Gatsby OST cover was a gloomier take on Southern hip-hop’s codeine effect — like OutKast‘s Aquemini reinterpreted for modern times.

Earlier this week Amy Winehouse’s father, Mitch, said he wasn’t a fan of the cover, though he did appreciate getting paid for permission. However, on air, Ronson noted how the cover’s guitar lines reminded him of Dap Kings‘ Thomas Brenneck’s from the original, and he shouted out to Nigel (Hollywood) Holt for the beat.

“I’m flattered and honored. I know Amy would be too,” Ronson said. Hear Beyonce and Andre 3000’s “Back to Black” cover after the jump.
