Frank Ocean Is Webby Awards Person Of The Year, Justin Bieber & Lady Gaga Also Honored

Last night (April 29) marked the 17th (!) annual Webby Awards, and it was quite a night for some of pop music’s big names. Frank Ocean was named Person of the Year for last year’s Tumblr post about his sexuality and his interaction with fans via Tumblr and Twitter. As for Artist of the Year, that went to Grimes, and there’s arguably nobody better at making music feel like the Internet, all chaotically swirling and hypnotizing. The electro-pop enigma is one of Web music’s biggest success stories, and she recently broke her online silence with a Tumblr screed against sexism in music.

While the night’s biggest awards didn’t go to pop megastars, there was still room for the likes of Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga for the less, well, “artistic” honors.

Bieber won the People’s Voice Award for Social Media Campaigns for the launch of his Girlfriend fragrance (sure why not!). We assumed Gaga would win for her anti-bullying efforts or Little Monsters network or something; alas, she nabbed the Celebrity/Fan Social Presence Award for her use of social media with her storefront at Barney’s. Again, sounds about right!
