Karmin’s “Acapella” Video: The Duo Dance (But Don’t Actually A Cappella) Their Heartache Away

In their “Acapella” video, Karmin air out their grievances of a not-so perfect guy, someone with that “Suit & Tie” and a Colgate smile, with help from a toaster. This particular prop seems like an unconventional choice, but in a verse, Amy Heidemann helpfully explains: “Thought he was gluten-free, but all he got was bread.” After all, rap could always use another metaphor to explain how someone’s full of it.

As if vaguely inspired by ’90s hip hop and R&B videos — TLC‘s “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg” and Destiny’s Child “Say My Name” come to mind — Karmin break down this kiss-off to stark red, green and blue backdrops, with further assistance from Nikes, back-up dancers and a red Mercedes Benz. The video also flashes to a bowl of pasta, which corresponds with Karmin’s lyric about Olive Garden, the duo’s idea of gourmet dining (otherwise known as “Little Italy”).

Olive Garden, Little Italy, whatever — what “Acapella” lacks in, well, an actual a cappella, it makes up for with carbs. Watch the video up top.
