Passion Pit took on fun.‘s anthemic “Carry On” for VEVO’s “Unexpected Covers” series, and just one listen shows why the band’s choice was fitting. While seated at the piano, Passion Pit’s frontman Michael Angelakos leads several back-up singers through the stripped-down rendition.

“… I think it’s one of the prettiest songs on the radio, and it’s rare that you get such a pretty song sung in a different way, with different instrumentation,” Angelakos said, referring to the song’s gradual build from an acoustic melody to a Queen-inspired guitar solo. “I think pared down like this, you can actually hear it for the brilliant song it is.”

Pared down this way, though, Angelakos also seemed to drive home the similarities between fun. and Passion Pit’s approach to pop. Both bands sing of dark moments with biting specificity and a lightness to their step. And given Gossamer‘s lead single “Take a Walk,” Angelakos also likely appreciated what fun. frontman Nate Ruess wrote about moving on, in particular: “May the sound of your past be the feet on your ground.”
