There’s a long list of Disney stars with recording contracts fighting for the spotlight on the charts, but the newest 16-year-old pop princess to emerge from that universe might be their fiercest yet: Meet Zendaya. She was born in 1996 (a year that I remember, which is great) and according to Wikipedia, she’s already starred in 70 different Disney Channel original series (approximately), appeared on Dancing With The Starsand released  a book called Between U and Me: How to Rock Your Tween Years with Style and Confidence.

In short: I’m jealous of Zendaya.

The surprise, though, is to find that “Replay,” her debut single as a solo artist on Hollywood Records (she already released a few songs from the soundtrack from her show Shake It Up) is mature, self-assured and sexy without being overly provocative: Lyrically, there’s nothing here to offend, but her breathy delivery and the glitchy production make it feel a properly adult single. Sonically, it evokes Usher‘s “Climax” or a Cassie mixtape track, but that yields to an explosive chorus — it’s a sick burner with a pristine pop finish.

In short: It’s probably the most distinctive debut single to come out of the Disney stable since Miley Cyrus‘ “See You Again.” Listen below.
