Katy Perry Passes Lady Gaga As Most Followed Woman On Twitter

Katy Perry has overtaken Lady Gaga as Twitter’s most followed woman. The “Teenage Dream” singer has accumulated 39.8 million followers, while Gaga has petered out at 39.3 million, thanks in part the latter’s inactivity on the social media service for the past few months. Both are behind Twitter king Justin Bieber, who has 42.3 million followers.

While Gaga has posted retweets in recent weeks, her last original tweet landed on February 6. KP, meanwhile, posts a steady stream of updates — everything from sending her condolences regarding Cory Monteith‘s death to shouting out her favorite new artists to pimping her new perfume.

Until recently, Gaga was an active tweeter, often using the platform to reach out to fans, but it was clear something was up Mother Monster’s sleeve this month when, in a Kanye-like move, she changed her Twitter avatar to the default egg. Her updated bio now reads “This interface has been shutdown temporarily. Please check back for updates.” A few days later, Gaga announced ARTPOP would be released on November 11, with the first single coming August 19 followed by a performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, so we can probably expect an uptick in her online activity.

But will all that late-year hype be enough for Gaga to retake the Queen of Twitter throne? Let us know what you think in the comments, or on Facebook and Twitter.
