The new season of Glee is set to premiere on September 26, but the viewer anticipation lies with the tribute episode dedicated to the late Cory Monteith. The show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, has shared more details about the special episode. In a new interview with Deadline, Murphy states the original idea of having Finn Hudson (Monteith’s character) die from an accidental drug overdose has been nixed.

He explains, “Basically, what we’re doing in the episode is we are not telling you yet, or maybe not at all, how that character died. The idea being, how somebody died is interesting and maybe morbid, but we say very early on in the episode, ‘This episode is about a celebration of that character’s life’.”

Murphy went on to say that any other way of remembering Monteith would be exploitative, adding: “I think it turned out to be a lovely tribute, and it’s a very heartfelt look at how young people grieve.”

As of now, the opening Beatles-themed episodes of the season are being reworked. The tribute episode will be shot this week, with the cast and crew taking a break on production afterwards. Look out for the episode dedicated to Monteith on October 10.
