Miley Cyrus Gets First Hot 100 #1 Single With “Wrecking Ball,” Dethrones Katy Perry
It’s a brand new day for Miley Cyrus, as her provocateur image pays dividends with a career milestone: The chanteuse has snagged the first #1 single of her career on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Wrecking Ball,” spurred on by the track’s controversial video and crazy streaming numbers. Previously, her highest-charting singles to date were lead Bangerz single “We Can’t Stop” and 2009’s “Party In The USA,” both of which bowed at #2.
The success of “Wrecking Ball” sees Katy Perry‘s “Roar,” which had taken the #1 spot for two consecutive weeks, going out with a stifled purr (sorry, Katy).
Billboard breaks down the numbers as follows: The song’s #1 is due in large part to the 19.3 million views on VEVO that the song notched in its first 24 hours of release, which saw it rising from 21 to 1 on the Streaming Songs chart, as well as leading the On-Demand Songs chart, where it rose from 18 to 1. Downloads of 477,000 sold saw the song ascend to the top spot on the Digital Songs chart as well. While it’s only just beginning to rise on the Radio and Pop Songs charts — at #59 and #35, respectively — streaming numbers were enough to buoy it to the top spot.
It’s also an auspicious sign for Cyrus’ upcoming LP Bangerz, which might just demolish the charts as effectively as Miley’s titular wrecking ball did her video set.
