Cody Simpson Is All Grown Up On (Beyonce-Referencing?) New Single “Surfboard”: Listen

Something tells me Cody Simpson has spent a lot of time listening to Beyonce‘s meme-spawning monster hit “Drunk In Love”. For starters, the chorus of “Surfboard” (“she on my surfboard, gonna ride it — surfboard!”) sounds like a watered-down reference to that famous lyric and there’s even a spoken interlude/laconic rap at the end that evokes Jay Z‘s verse.

So how does the Aussie teenager make the leap from the guitar-strumming boy-next-door to provocative ladies’ man?  Surprisingly smoothly. “Surfboard” is an extremely catchy urban-pop song with a splash of dub-step to keep the soundscape interesting. This is a fresh new sound for Cody and could snag him that long overdue crossover radio hit. Listen after the jump.
