Katy Perry Is Currently Embroiled In A Twitter Beef With Loathsome Chicago Rapper Chief Keef

May 23rd, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Katy Perry is currently in the middle of an ugly Twitter spat with Chicago MC Chief Keef (well, the “ugly” part is all on Keef’s end). Perry recently tweeted about Keef’s song, “Hate Bein’ Sober,” saying “Just heard a new song on the radio called ‘I hate being sober’ I now have serious doubt for the world.” In terms of insults, that isn’t even up to the level of the light ribbing Diplo lobbed Daft Punk‘s way. Pretty harmless. Well, the eminently reasonable Chief Keef took major offense, and also took a page out of the Chris Brown Handbook of Twitter Etiquette (always a wise career move!), throwing a couple misogynistic tweets her way – including one in which he said he’d “smack the shit out of her.” Classy, bro!

For those of you not up to speed on Keef, here’s the CliffsNotes version. He’s a controversial figure in the hip-hop world, inspiring many a thinkpiece. Kanye West helped fuel the kid’s rise when he highlighted “I Don’t Like,” but rap fans are divided on Keef’s music – does he make mind-numbing bangers or does he tap into a grittiness that’s been missing from rap recently? But he’s mainly a flashpoint because of his generally contemptible behavior: Keef has been arrested on drug and gun charges, he has been involved in a shootout with police and he celebrated the death of one of his rivals via Twitter. So, yeah.

Dude’s only 17, so you can chalk this stuff up to him being a dumb, idiot teenager just like all the dumb, idiot teenagers acting like dumb idiots, but this is another off-putting episode in the rapper’s short career. Anyway, head below to see the SMH-worthy tweets. More »

The last time Pharrell Williams featured on a Top 10 single in the US was in 2006, when Ludacris‘ “Money Maker” hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100. And the last time Daft Punk landed in the Top 10? Well, sorry to slam the wrecking ball into your LED-lit pyramids, but that never really happened…until this week. Buoyed no doubt by the anticipation for this past Tuesday’s (May 21) release of the duo’s fourth album Random Access Memories, the Pharrell-featuring “Get Lucky” inched its way up to #10 on the Hot 100, thus making Daft Punk’s first Top 40 hit on these shores also their first Top 10.

All of this is to say that when it comes time for the Internet to begin carting out the inevitable Song of Summer lists shortly, the Robots will no doubt be dancing among the contenders. More »

J. Cole’s ‘Born Sinner’ Features TLC’s T-Boz & Chilli

May 23rd, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Drake and Ne-Yo aren’t the only ones getting in some studio time with TLC‘s surviving members. While those two guys are going to appear on the forthcoming TLC album, J. Cole told BBC Radio he has enlisted T-Boz and Chilli for a track on his own Born Sinner (out June 18). While Cole’s record will feature some other vocalists as well (including Miguel on the great “Power Trip”), he also pointed out the LP won’t feature any other rappers – a rare move.

Oh, and when asked if he’d ever collaborate with Cash Money’s newest signee, Paris Hilton, the MC gave an emphatic “never,” before backtracking and qualifying that he would, but only if “she said very minimal things.” Hear the full interview below. More »

Charli XCX’s “Take My Hand” Video: Watch Her Bounce Off The Walls

Rave On

Charli XCX has premiered the video for “Take My Hand,” the glitchy, sugary track off her splendid debut, True Romance. A while back, Charli told us one of the album’s tracks was about falling in love while on E, and we suspect this is the one, since she sings “I swallowed something stupid / It’s making me stay awake” and the video finds her bouncing off the walls at a warehouse rave. Among the strobing lights and the song’s cascading bleep-bloops, Charli sings, dances and gives come-hither stares in slo-mo. The nifty juxtaposition was pulled off by her bestie Ryan Andrews, who has directed almost all of her videos.

Check it out up top, and then watch the Brit cover Backstreet Boys‘ “I Want It That Way” if you haven’t yet.

Diplo took a break from posting about Daft Punk‘s Random Access Memories to put together a Major Lazer remix of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘ “Can’t Hold Us.” Macklemore’s rapping takes a backseat here, with Ray Dalton‘s vocal melody now the centerpiece. Underneath the vocals you’ve got Major Lazer’s trademark squiggly synths and drum machine claps. While it’s not as revelatory as that “Thrift Shop”/”No Scrubs” mashup, it’s still a solid dance reinterpretation.
