We Like It This Way!

Charli XCX has always proudly stated her infatuation with big-tent ’90s pop. So when she pulled out a cover of one of that decade’s classics during a performance at Chicago’s Borderline Music, we knew she’d turn out a loving, novel tribute. What we didn’t expect, though, was that she’d sidestep her goddesses like Spice Girls and Gwen Stefani, and opt instead for Backstreet Boys‘ iconic “I Want It That Way.”

It was the first time the Brit has ever done the cover live, and her version takes the balladeering earnestness of the original and turns it into a dreamy, synth-based floater. It’s a pretty interpretation, and can we just say, it’s really nice to hear her vocals with such a stripped-down arrangement!

Check it out up top, and then see how it compares to One Direction‘s cover of the classic. More »

Fifth Harmony Camila Normani Freestyle Rap
Bunny?

One highlight of Idolator’s shoot with the enchanting ladies of Fifth Harmony? Despite fan requests that they twerk for the camera, the girls weren’t feeling quite that ambitious — but Camila Cabello was willing to get a little bit spontaneous in a freestyle rhyme she came up with about her bandmate Normani Kordei. (The vocals weren’t quite as magnificent as they were during the girls’ cover of Taylor Swift‘s “Red,” but that’s totally forgivable.)

With the other girls assisting on beatbox, Camila proved that she has unparalleled rhyming prowess and swag for days — especially toward the end, when she very humbly asked for exactly the type of critical acclaim she’s bound to earn. More »

Beyonce, Shakira & Lady Gaga Make ‘Forbes’ Most Powerful Women List

Presumably, there was a time when Forbes reported on financial news and analyzed economic trends. BORING! As far as we can tell, the outlet now exists only as a Play-Doh maker spewing out limitless permutations of  listicles of the Most Powerful/Most Successful/Wealthiest Famous People With Clickable Names. Because, that counts as finance crap, right? The latest roster featuring some big-name pop stars is their list of the World’s Most Powerful Women. Beyonce and Shakira both make the cut, at 17 and 52, respectively. Lady Gaga also slips in at #45. More »

Daft Punk Slow It Down With “Horizon”: Hear The Spacey ‘Random Access Memories’ Bonus Track

May 22nd, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Daft Punk‘s latest album Random Access Memories is filled with smooth uptempos, but the French electro-house duo toys with a different sound on “Horizon.” The bonus instrumental, which is featured on the Japanese version of the album, is completely hypnotic and begins with an acoustic guitar and atmospheric sheen. The song gradually picks up speed when the other instruments kick in, building to a space-rock odyssey reminiscent of Pink Floyd.

The mellow, trance-like song is a surprising change from the already surprising RAM material. Listen to “Horizon” below. More »

Quadron 7 Things Avalanche
The Best Kind Of Avalanche

Quadron‘s “Hey Love” is an early contender for song of the summer: The humming, infectious soul-inflected number is light, blithe and totally irresistible. (The video, too, is just absurdly likable.)

But the Danish duo — comprised of vocalist Coco O. (born Coco Maja Hastrup Karshøj) and producer Robin Hannibal, who is also in the band Rhye — are a more complex act than that song’s featherweight charms would suggest, as we learned when Coco dropped by Idolator headquarters to chat about the band’s upcoming album, AvalancheMore »

Rihanna Teases Strip Club-Themed “Pour It Up” Video

May 22nd, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Rihanna posted the above photo teasing her forthcoming video for “Pour It Up,” along with the message, “ALL I SEE IZ $IGN$ #pouritupvideoshoot #stripclubsanddollabillz.” Coincidentally, that’s the email signature on her corporate Outlook account. Anyway, if you look closely, you can see that Rihanna had her own currency printed for the video, and we think she should totally start selling the funny money at her merch tables. More »
