2 Chainz is leading the lifestyles of the rich and famous in his new promotional trailer for his sophomore album, Based ON A T.R.U. Story II. The black-and-white video highlights the essentials needed to be a rockstar: Playing with big booty strippers, Instagramming your catered meals, hopping on and off private jets, playing in front of huge crowds and wearing two chains (obviously — it’s his name).
But what really sets the tone is the Jimi Hendrix classic “Purple Haze” blasting in the background. Swag tho? More »
J. Cole‘s Born Sinner definitely avoided the sophomore slump, but it received a few tepid reviews, one (or several) of which seem to have ticked off the generally cool-headed rapper. Today (June 19) Cole took to Twitter to call out music critics, arguing that they (we) overthink and under-listen to albums before reviewing them. And that practice, along with album sales projections, are “fucking up hip-hop.” He finished off by lobbing the “critics aren’t fans” go-to and said “fuck critics” — but not before showing a bit of optimism, firing off names like Kendrick Lamar and Drake as those who are “saving hip-hop.”

Cher is taking no chances with her 107th comeback! In the last 24 hours, the 67-year-old sex kitten graced The Voice with her glorious presence (wearing what appeared to be Tina Turner‘s Private Dancer wig), spoke to Billboard about her new album Closer To The Truth and dropped one of the cutest lyrics videos of 2013.
“Woman’s World” is possibly the campest song ever recorded, so it’s only fitting that the addictive dance anthem get a kitsch lyric video. A variety of animated pin-up girls from yesteryear strike saucy poses while Paul Oakenfold‘s lyrics spill across the screen. It looks fantastic and bodes well for the actual film clip. Which, given her current frantic output, can’t be far off. More »
Kanye West‘s Yeezus has its share of provocative lyrics — there’s a whole discussion to be had about his use of sex on this album — but the first “official” controversy seems to come from his Parkinson’s line in “On Sight.” Kanye raps, “Soon as I pull up and park the Benz, we get this bitch shaking like Parkinson’s.” Now the American Parkinson Disease Association has spoken out about the rhyme, saying, “We find these lyrics distasteful and the product of obvious ignorance.”
One quick search of “Parkinson’s” or “Michael J. Fox” on Rap Genius shows this has become a pretty common lyrical trope in hip-hop in recent years, but whatever, we’re OK with this response. Rap lyrics can be distasteful. When they are, it gives the offended camp a chance to briefly step into the spotlight and get people talking about the relevant issue. So rappers, keep offending, and people who get offended, keep calling them on it. The circle of life!
Any guesses as to who will be next to condemn lyrics from Yeezus? We have a few predictions. More »
Nelly gets braggadocious for his new single “Get Like Me”, off his forthcoming seventh album M.O. Featured artist Pharrell (who also produced the track) channels his inner Ying Yang Twin with his seductive whisper of a hook, while Nicki Minaj brings back her “Nicki Da Ninja” alter ego with a playful verse. The track’s intricate drum beat and fun xylophone melody makes for a surefire summer booty shaker.
Given that “Hey Porsche” peaked just outside the Top 40 in the United States, he could use a mainstream hit — and this might be the one. Bump it below. More »
Our rear ends are getting tired from all the gyrating we’ve been doing for the past hour to the fancy trashterpiece that is Miley Cyrus‘ “We Can’t Stop” music video. And so we decided to cool our twerk long enough to really have a think about what we’ve seen. The Diane Martel-directed clip presents many saucy images of comeback queen MC for us to process — and they’re mainly ones of her mouth, crotch and, um, posterior. (But mostly of her mouth.)
As always, we’re here to serve you the most sophisticated coverage of all things pop, so here, then, are 14 images of the 20-year-old singer just bein’ Miley, from her latest music video.
