Listen To Jennifer Lopez Offer Up The “Greatest Part Of Me”
10:30 AM on Thu Feb 4 2010 by Robbie Daw
It seems that Jennifer Lopez is clearly motivated after the non-success of "Louboutins." While her new tune "Greatest Part Of Me" isn't quite as energetic as "Everybody's Girl," which surfaced last week, it's still a pleasant enough, breezy mid-tempo number with a slight hint of early-'90s R&B/pop. In other words, a perfect jam to snap your fingers to as springtime draws near. Hear it below!

Out With The Horns, In With Scissor Sisters And Cathy Dennis For Mark Ronson
9:12 AM on Wed Feb 3 2010 by Robbie Daw
Grammy Award winner Mark Ronson, who produced Amy Winehouse's "Rehab," has been rounding up artists to appear on his next album. Just don't expect it to have the same retro feel of his previous LP, Version. "There's no covers, and no horns," he tells NME. "It's written with some of the people that actually wrote the songs I covered on the last album and that I didn't actually even know at the time."
Ronson let on that Scissor Sisters, Santigold, Miike Snow, Pill and Cathy Dennis are all on tap to appear on the new album, due out this spring or summer. Wait—Cathy Dennis? As in '90s pop star/American Idol theme song and "Toxic" writer Cathy Dennis? This project just got ten times more interesting! More »

Iyaz Borrows From Another Female Artist “Again”
4:41 PM on Thu Jan 28 2010 by Becky Bain
Behind every powerful male R&B star today is an even more powerful woman. Producer J.R. Rotem can't stop going back in time to fiddle with female artist's hits—he sampled Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek" for Jason Derulo's "Whatcha Say" and Enya's "Sail Away" for the Iyaz track "Get Away." And now he's going all the way back to 1993 to lift Janet Jackson's hit "Again" for Iyaz's second single, "Solo," from the British Virgin Islander's upcoming debut album, My Life. Can we give it on up for the ladies laying down the ground work for all these tracks? And does Rotem even like any songs that haven't been smash hits before? Listen to "Again" "Solo" after the jump: More »

iTunes Users Praise Justin Timberlake And Matt Morris’ “Hallelujah” All The Way To #1
10:40 AM on Tue Jan 26 2010 by Robbie Daw
As of yesterday, Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris' take on "Hallelujah" from the Hope For Haiti Now telethon was the most downloaded track on iTunes from the charity event. Now it's simply the most downloaded song on iTunes, period.
The Hope For Haiti Now compilation will reportedly debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart this week, but it was the two pals' somber cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" that struck a particular chord with viewers. However, according to Morris, there was almost another song the pair went with for the telecast instead. More »

Boyzone Mourn Stephen Gately In The Mika-Written “Gave It All Away”
8:05 AM on Tue Jan 19 2010 by Robbie Daw
Poor Boyzone never attained the one-hit wonder success here in the States that rivals Take That did in the '90s, save for a brief flash in the pan when radio showed minor interest in Notting Hill soundtrack ballad "No Matter What." Nor did the U.K. show much interest when the Irish boyband attempted a Take That-style comeback two years ago. Unfortunately it was the untimely passing of 33-year-old member Stephen Gately this past October that thrust them back in the spotlight.
Below the jump is the music video for Boyzone's "Gave It All Away," the first for the band since Gately's death. The track was penned by Mika. More »

Philly Soul Legend Teddy Pendergrass Has Died
10:04 AM on Thu Jan 14 2010 by Robbie Daw
Grammy-nominated singer Teddy Pendergrass died yesterday at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania, where he was being treated for colon cancer. He was 59.
Before launching a solo career in the late 1970s, Philadelphia-based Teddy introduced the world to his smooth vocals during his stint as lead singer of Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes. The group racked Philly soul hits like the Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff-produced "The Love I Lost" and "If You Don't Know Me By Now" (watch below)—nearly inescapable staples on Oldies radio. More »

The Morning Mix: Adam Lambert Tones It Down A Notch
6:00 AM on Wed Jan 13 2010 by Becky Bain
Morning folks! We've got a serious American Idol hangover after kicking off Season 9 last night. And you know what cures a hangover? More of whatever made you ill in the first place, of course! More Idol dish in a bit, but first, let's get to the mix!
Did You Hear?
:: Watch a short preview of the music video for Adam Lambert's new single, "Whataya Want From Me." As far as we can tell, there's little leather and zero snakes, but we haven't seen the remaining two and a half minutes of the full vid. Fingers crossed! [Best Week Ever]
:: Spinner counts down the 10 Best Whistling Parts In Songs. And "Young Folks" is just the beginning. We'd respectfully nominate Katy Perry's "Ur So Gay" for consideration. [Spinner]
:: Clipse's former manager Anthony Gonzalez is facing a 32-year prison sentence for being the leader of a $20 million drug ring. Wow. Imagine how much bigger Clipse would be if he hadn't had a side gig. [Hip Hop Wired]
:: Usher got robbed! More than $1 million in jewelry, furs and electronics were stolen out of his SUV. Ush—maybe next time just ride a bike and leave all your precious jewls and fancy rich man belongings at home, kay? [E! Online]
:: Thirteen-year-old Cymphonique (daughter of rapper Master P) has signed a record deal with Sony Music, is developing her own show at Nickelodeon, and just released a single called "Tell the DJ" that isn't half bad. When I was 13, I was reenacting The Lion King in my basement with my stuffed animals. She wins. [Just Jared]
Behind the jump: The country group who beat out Lady Gaga for an AMA performs on Ellen, and we time-travel back to give one of 2000's biggest hits a fresh listen.

Kelly Clarkson’s New Music And — Surprise! — New Covers Emerge From Live Gig
10:33 AM on Mon Dec 28 2009 by Becky Bain
Kelly Clarkson seems to have wrapped up her All I Ever Wanted Tour with one heck of a performance. A trove of new live Kelly recordings (including several new songs) is up, and now it's pretty much impossible not to be thrilled about the potential of her recording a new album. She's due to tour well into the new year, but for now, check out these first hints of her new direction — if nothing else, you have to respect anyone who writes a song for no other good reason than "I'm a nerd Twilight fan." Plus her cover of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."

Backtracking: Ace Of Base ‘The Bridge’
1:26 PM on Fri Dec 18 2009 by Robbie Daw
Backtracking is our recurring look back at some of pop’s forgotten albums. Because, dammit, Miley Cyrus needs to start respecting her elders.
Ah, Ace Of Base. Only in the reactionary, post-grunge 1990s could Americans have briefly embraced such a pop phenomenon. Something about the reggae-inflected synth hooks and icy detachment of the Swedish quartet—siblings Jonas, Jenny and Malin Berggren, and their pal Ulf “Buddha” Ekberg—had us going bonkers for The Sign (or Happy Nation, as it was titled outside the U.S.).
And yet, when AOB’s sophomore album The Bridge was released in 1995, we tossed these supposed heirs to the ABBA throne out in the cold—despite The Bridge being a set of pop jams far superior to their first offering. More »
