Every person to whom I’ve sent the Spice Girls’ video for their underappreciated 1997 single “Stop” has responded with something akin to a “yay,” so I figured I’d pass it along as a way to make up for both the ickiness unleashed in that previous post about the latest batch of Oprah-revealed unpleasantness and all the total bummer Sugababes news that’s been breaking this week. Feel free to comment with your favorite video from the five-headed pop hydra, although anyone who tries to say that “Holler” is any good at all is fired. [Dailymotion] MORE »

The Number One Reason Why Traffic-Baiting Listicles Are Annoying, Or: Summertime, And The Sexism Is Easy
While trawling my RSS feed for interesting things to post on this lovely September morning, I came across another one of those dreaded late-summer listicles counting down “hot” women in pop, this one coming from a site purporting to contain “Gossip For Grown-Ups.” Its hook? “Female pop stars are not all talentless bints who clutter up newspapers and snarky entertainment sites (thanks for that) with their inane chatter and their lady bits.” Well… thanks? Although, uh, all the “writing” in said listicle consists of asides like “Do you think we are so easily won over by her releasing a song about her kissing a girl? Probably.” and “Just turn down the sound and watch the video instead.” It also refers to Madonna as “old vinegar tits.” Just so I’m straight here—is it only OK when men engage in “inane chatter” over pop stars’ “lady bits,” or is it only kosher when said tongue-wagging is couched in a pathetic grab for traffic? Kelly Clarkson Thinks That Robert Pattinson Sparkles
Kelly Clarkson’s performance of the delightful throwback track “I Want You” at this weekend’s Illinois State Fair was marked by her pulling out a cardboard cutout of Twilight’s Robert Pattinson that was emblazoned with the words “YOU WANT ME?” and serenading it. Clarkson is a known fan of Stephenie Meyer’s vampires-and-virgins series, but as someone who’s planning on seeing Clarkson later on this tour of fairs and festivals, I hope that she brings around effigies of other heartthrobs for future dates. Video of her one-sided singalong after the jump. MORE »

The best sentence I’ve read all day week: “Surrounded by candles, Stapp strummed an acoustic guitar, with an annotated Bible open on the table in front of him, next to a closed copy of The Art of War.” Especially when I think of it in the context of this headline: “Creed’s Stapp Talks Breakup, Make-Up and Shaved Head.” Oh, Rolling Stone, thank you for giving me something to giggle uncontrollably about after a too-long workweek. The Monkeemobile Makes Room For Eddie
As a lunchtime treat, please enjoy this blend of Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper” up with the Monkees’ “I’m A Believer.” It’s not perfect (the tweaking on the guitar solo could use some work), but Bruce Dickinson’s raspy yowl does actually do a nice job of mixing in with the Neil Diamond-penned tune’s sunny keyboards. Clip after the jump. MORE »

Dillinger Escape Plan Bring Their Pencils
This video of Dillinger Escape Plan covering Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher” is from last year’s Warped Tour, and its attendant comment section is littered with a bunch of Internet pedants bitching about the minor flubs of the lyrics, but oh man did stumbling across this YouTube clip make my day. Of course, no one with a knowledge of the DEP’s ability to shred should be surprised by the note-perfect replicas of Eddie Van Halen, but you have to give whoever’s on backing vocals extra credit for performing his Michael Anthony duties more than ably. The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy is participating in Infinite Summer, in which people read David Foster Wallace’s mammoth tour de force Infinite Jest between June 21 and September 21, and in a post on the readathon’s official site he talks about how he’s actually owned the book for about 12 years but hasn’t quite gotten around to reading it yet. (OK, so I’m posting this in part because I’m going to read–ahem, reread–IJ as part of this too, and I was wondering if any of you all out there were as well. Summer starts Sunday! It can’t come soon enough!) [Infinite Summer] MORE »

Deborah Gibson’s Shark Vs. Octopus Movie: Just Try Not To Make An “Out Of The Blue” Joke
Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus is a straight-to-DVD film starring Deborah “Not Debbie” Gibson and Lorenzo Lamas, with a plot that, well, is pretty much summed up by the title, a la Snakes On A Plane. Gibson plays a mad-but-not scientist who tries to stage a fight between the two giant beasts in an effort for them to annihilate each other, only I guess things go horribly awry because the shark leaps out of the water in an attempt to take a bite out of the Golden Gate Bridge, while the giant octopus takes over submarines while looking like a super-evil, non-yummy version of Nannerpuss. I only have one question: How is this DVD not packaged with 3-D glasses? [YouTube; HT Lucas] MORE »
