The two Grammy nominees trade places as Adele’s third 21 single “Set Fire To The Rain”, which previously spent two weeks at #1, now cedes the peak position to Super Bowl singer Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)”. This marks the American Idol winner’s third chart-topper, following 2002’s “A Moment Like This” and 2009’s “My Life Would Suck Without You”.

Meanwhile, Madonna’s lead MDNA single “Give Me All Your Luvin’” crashes into the Hot 100 at #13, giving the Super Bowl halftime performer her 56th single to appear on the chart and her first Top 20 hit since “4 Minutes” reached #3 in 2008. Billboard notes that Madge is now tied with Dionne Warwick for the second-most appearances on the Hot 100 among women. They both trail Aretha Franklin, who’s racked up 73 entries on the main singles chart.

“Give Me All Your Luvin’” sold 115,000 digital downloads between Friday morning, when it was made available for purchase on iTunes, and Sunday evening’s chart cut-off time. Currently the song is perched at #7 on iTunes.

Madonna’s first appearance on the Hot 100 came nearly 30 years ago, when “Holiday” peaked at #16 in 1983.

Adele Still On Top Of Album Chart, Lana Del Rey Debuts At #2 http://idolator.com/6171221/adele-album-chart-lana-del-rey-debuts http://idolator.com/6171221/adele-album-chart-lana-del-rey-debuts#comments Wed, 08 Feb 2012 17:33:43 +0000 Robbie Daw http://idolator.com/?p=6171221 More »]]> Lana Del ReyWith Adele’s 21 in the peak position on Billboard’s Top 200 for a 19th non-consecutive week, the album is just seven days shy of tying the 20-week run at #1 by the soundtrack to 1992 film The Bodyguard — i.e. the most recent album to have a lengthier run atop the chart. 21 sold another 122,000 copies last week, and the Grammy Album Of The Year nominee will likely see a boost in sales after this Sunday’s ceremony.

Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die debuts just behind Adele, at #2, with 77,000 copies sold out of the gate. In the UK, where Del Rey had been promoting her album with various performances leading up to its release, Born To Die is at #1 after selling 117,000. Aside from her debated-to-death Saturday Night Live gig, Del Rey’s most recent high-profile US appearance was on The Late Show With David Letterman last week. Last night she performed a small set at Los Angeles music store Amoeba Records.

Other new entries in the Top 10 of the Top 200 include Canadian crooner Leonard Cohen’s 12th album Old Ideas at #3 (41,000) and Detroit gospel singer Fred Hammond’s latest LP God, Love & Romance at #8 (26,000).

On a final note, Billboard reports that Super Bowl halftime performer Madonna received a 1,341% boost in sales for her 2009 greatest hits collection Celebration. The set re-enters the Top 200 at #24 (16,000). Celebration had previously peaked at #7, and has been certified Gold since its release three years ago.

The divisive “Video Games songstress is also tops at Amazon’s MP3 store. As for this week, Adele’s Grammy-nominated sophomore effort is #1 after another 116,000 in sales.

Over in the UK, Del Rey was doing the promo rounds last week, during which she gave impressive stripped-down performances for the BBC ahead of her LP’s release. The Official Charts Company reports that Born To Die is on course to debut at the top of the album chart. Even more impressive: the record is even outselling the rest of the albums in the UK Top 10 combined.

Back on these shores, seven new entries crash into the Top 10, including country crooner Tim McGraw’s 11th studio album Emotional Traffic (at #2 with 68,000 sold), indie-pop singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson’s fifth LP Human Again (#5, 40,000) and former American Idol contestant Kellie Pickler’s third studio offering 100 Proof (#7, 27,000).

Meanwhile, it’s a bittersweet week for Seal. He and wife Heidi Klum are heading for a divorce, but the “Kiss From A Rose” singer lands his second Top 10 album in the States with Soul 2 (#8, 27,000).

Adele’s ‘21′ Has Now Had Longest Stretch At #1 Since ‘Bodyguard’ Soundtrack http://idolator.com/6152742/adeles-21-has-now-had-longest-stretch-at-1-since-bodyguard-soundtrack http://idolator.com/6152742/adeles-21-has-now-had-longest-stretch-at-1-since-bodyguard-soundtrack#comments Wed, 25 Jan 2012 17:07:28 +0000 Robbie Daw http://idolator.com/?p=6152742 More »]]> Adele 21 Whitney Houston The BodyguardThis week Adele’s Grammy-nominated sophomore LP 21 sails past the Titanic soundtrack’s lengthy stretch of 16 weeks atop the main album chart. Now at 17 weeks in the peak position on Billboad’s Top 200, 21 is the longest chart-topping album since Whitney Houston spent 20 weeks at #1 with The Bodyguard soundtrack between 1992 and 1993.

Adele’s chances at catching up to Bodyguard, if not surpassing it, are aided by the fact that third 21 single “Set Fire To The Rain” is currently burning up radio and is nicely perched at #2 on the Hot 100, just behind Rihanna and Calvin Harris’ “We Found Love”.

Also, the photogenic cover girl is heading into the Grammys on February 12 with six nominations, including Album, Record and Song Of The Year. A win in any of the big categories could boost 21’s visibility even higher — if that’s possible at this point — and ensure additional winter weeks of high sales.

Adele’s ‘21′ Matches ‘Titanic’ Soundtrack’s 16-Week Stay At #1 http://idolator.com/6144141/adeles-21-titanic-soundtrack-16-week-chart http://idolator.com/6144141/adeles-21-titanic-soundtrack-16-week-chart#comments Wed, 18 Jan 2012 17:14:33 +0000 Robbie Daw http://idolator.com/?p=6144141 More »]]> Adele 21 eraAdele’s 21 has finally caught up to the Titanic soundtrack’s 16-week run at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. The 1997 movie’s score by James Horner (complete with Celine Dion’s chart-topping hit “My Heart Will Go On”) was the last LP to rack up as many weeks atop the main album chart. Prior to that, the 1992 Bodyguard soundtrack ruled with its staggering 20-week reign at #1. Can Adele also knock Whitney for a loop?

21 sold another 104,000 copies last week. Billboard notes that Adele’s sophomore effort is only the 20th album to top the chart for at least 16 weeks. It’s also the first record since Usher’s 2004 LP Confessions to have 33 weeks of sales of 100,000 copies or more.

Needless to say, 21, which has earned Adele six Grammy nominations and three BRIT nods, is full of cha-ching! The album is approaching its one-year anniversary, as it was released in Europe on January 24, 2011. Here in the States, we had to wait four weeks, until February 22, for the album’s official release.

Elsewhere on the chart, Give Us Rest by Texas Christian rock act David Crowder Band makes its debut at #2 (50,000 copies sold), while Irish rockers Snow Patrol enter at #5 with Fallen Empires (33,000).

Adele Set To Tie ‘Titanic’ Soundtrack’s Run — Next Stop: Beating ‘Bodyguard’ http://idolator.com/6137691/adele-titanic-soundtrack-bodyguard http://idolator.com/6137691/adele-titanic-soundtrack-bodyguard#comments Thu, 12 Jan 2012 17:13:57 +0000 Robbie Daw http://idolator.com/?p=6137691 More »]]> Adele Bodyguard Whitney Houston Titanic soundtrackAdele missed out on nabbing the People’s Choice Awards she was up for (thanks to sweeping songstress Katy Perry), but that hasn’t stopped the people from choosing to purchase 21 and its hit singles. “Set Fire To The Rain” moved up to #4 on the new Hot 100 chart published today, thus making it the London singer’s third Top 5 hit off her sophomore album. And with 21 currently parked at #1 yet again on the Top 200, Billboard now reports that the LP should have no problem tying the Titanic soundtrack’s 16-week run atop the album chart next week.

The Titanic soundtrack, which was released in 1997 to tie in with James Cameron’s Oscar-winning epic and contains James Horner’s memorable score as well as Celine Dion’s tearjerker “My Heart Will Go On”, is the most recent album to spend more weeks on top of the main album chart than 21. But once Adele sinks that ship, what album’s record run will she be targeting next? Why, the Bodyguard soundtrack, of course!

Released nearly 20 years ago, in November 1992, the soundtrack to the film The Bodyguard contains such Whitney Houston classics as “I’m Every Woman” (originally recorded by Chaka Khan), “I Have Nothing” and the Dolly Parton-penned “I Will Always Love You”, which spent a whopping 14 weeks atop the Hot 100. The album itself was #1 on the Top 200 for a total of 20 weeks. (For the record, Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii is another album that had a 20-weeks stay #1.)

Adele’s certainly got her work cut out for her if she wants to match Whitney’s run. True, 21 was the best-selling album of 2011, but it’s quickly approaching its one-year anniversary. With 6 million copies sold at this point, one could argue that Adele might be running out of people who don’t already own the LP and are willing to shell out cash for it.

Still, she’s up for multiple Grammy Awards next month, including the biggies: Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Album Of The Year. A win in the latter category (or even, dare we say it, a performance at the show) could keep 21 sailing past Titanic and straight toward Whitney’s Bodyguard.

Do you think 21 has enough steam left to surpass the weeks spent on top of the album chart by Whitney’s classic soundtrack? Let us know below!

We’re putting our cash on Adele for passing up the 1997 movie’s score, since awards season is just now heating up and the photogenic singer, who’s up for six Grammys, is rumored to be opening the televised ceremony on February 12.

Tulsa rockers SafetySuit have the only new entry in the Top 10 this week, in the form of their sophomore album These Times, which sold 26,000 copies out of the gate and arrives at #7. The band pushes Lady Antebellum out of the upper reaches of the chart, while the rest of the Top 10 players simply shuffle around.

Getting back to 21, Adele’s sophomore album will celebrate its one-year anniversary next week across the pond, as it was released on January 19, 2011 in Europe. The LP didn’t hit American shores until February 22 last year.

Her sophomore album 21 is currently #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 for a 14th non-consecutive week, and, when all was said and done, it sold 5.82 million copies last year — the most any album has sold since 2004, when Usher’s Confessions moved 7.98 million copies. Likewise, “Rolling In The Deep” capped off ‘11 at 5.81 million, marking the first time a single has topped 5 million paid downloads in a year. See who sold what in 2011 below.

Also, Adele and Lady Gaga are the only artists to rack up both a Top 10 best-selling single and album in 2011, and Adele is the lone person to land two songs in the Top 10 for singles.

Needless to say, the London-based diva probably has enough cha-ching in her pocket to go out and celebrate.

That said, Adele’s Grammy-nominated sophomore set 21 soldiers on and caps the album roundup for a 14th non-consecutive week after another 144,000 copies were sold. It’s still the most weeks spent at #1 since the Titanic soundtrack’s 16-week reign in 1998. And with awards season momentum behind her, Adele could very well capsize Titanic’s title.

Billboard’s Keith Caulfield points out that Lady Antebellum’s Own The Night, LMFAO’s Sorry For Party Rocking and Florence + The Machine’s Ceremonials were all recently discounted to $6.99 on iTunes, hence their respective surges to #4, #5 and #6 on the Top 200.

That brings 21 up to 5.68 million copies sold, far and away 2011’s highest seller (unless Michael Buble miraculously manages to sell over 3 million copies of his holiday LP post-Christmas — highly unlikely). But the SNL performer did manage to claim the charts’ top slot for the fifth week running, getting stragglers into the Christmas spirit with 467,000 copies sold, surpassing Lady Gaga’s Born This Way to become the year’s second highest-selling album.

The week’s only debut to reach the Top 10 was Young Jeezy’s TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition, pulling in to a none-too-shabby #3 position. And thanks to a drastic price reduction on Amazon, Rihanna’s Talk That Talk talked its way back into the Top 10 at #7.
