This week Adam Lambert made American Idol-related chart history when his LP Trespassing succeeded Blown Away by fellow AI alum Carrie Underwood at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 — a first for onetime Idol contestants. But the hopes of those looking to Kris Allen to pull off a threepeat of sorts with Thank You Camellia are likely to be dashed by the time next week’s chart rolls around.

Billboard has John Mayer‘s latest LP Born And Raised pegged as the next #1, and indicates that industry sources say it could sell upwards of 220,000 copies by the time data is added up. Both Allen’s Thank You Camellia and Haley Reinhart‘s debut Listen Up are expected to crack the Top 20.

Adam Lambert‘s Trespassing has sailed to the #1 position on the Billboard Top 200 in its first week, marking the American Idol alum’s first chart-topping LP. (Previous offering For Your Entertainment peaked at #3 in 2009.) This gives the “Never Close Our Eyes” crooner the distinction of being the first openly-gay singer to top the main album chart in the US, according to the Village Voice‘s math, with a single-artist title. Another interesting tidbit: this marks the first time one Idol alum has succeeded another — in this case, Carrie Underwood — in the Top 200′s upper-most position.

Alas, as Billboard notes, Trespassing‘s out-of-the-gate performance also marks the lowest sales week for a #1 album in 2012 (it moved 77,000 copies). It’s also the lowest number of albums sold for a chart-topping LP since Adele‘s awards magnet 21 was in its 12th non-consecutive week in the peak position with 76,000 last August.

Regardless, a #1 album is a #1 album, and Lambert certainly deserves to pop a bottle in celebration over Trespassing this week.

Carrie Underwood‘s fourth LP Blown Away manages to cling to the peak position on Billboard‘s Top 200 for a second week, after music buyers grabbed another 120,000 copies. Both that album and Adele‘s 21 (101,000), which is back up to #2, sold well in the lead-up to Mother’s Day this past Sunday. Guess it’s safe to say that, when it comes to music, Mom is into good girls and heartache?

Blown Away is now the tenth album to top the chart in 2012, though technically, it’s not the first country record to do so. That honor goes to Lionel Richie‘s Tuskegee, which has already racked up two weeks at #1. This week Richie’s latest is up to #3 (71,000).

There are only two new entries in the Top 10 this week: Silversun Pickups’ third album Neck Of The Woods (41,000), which comes in at #6, and This Is How I Feel (33,000), the fifth LP from R&B crooner Tank, at #9.

You might be so over Gotye‘s “Somebody That I Used To Know”, but the singer’s smash single with Kimbra is only getting more popular. “Somebody” has become the first song to hit #1 on the Hot 100, the Alternative chart and the Dance/Club charts simultaneously. The Belgium-born Australian artist can thank the electronic genre’s various remixes of his bitter breakup tune, such as this one by Tiesto, for helping it become a hit on the dance charts. More cause for celebration: not only is the song topping the Alternative charts, “Somebody” is now the longest-reigning #1 single by a soloist in the chart’s 23-year history. Carrie Underwood‘s fourth LP Blown Away becomes her third to blow to the peak position on Billboard‘s Top 200 this week. The album sold 267,000 copies out of the gate, putting it behind only Madonna‘s MDNA, which started with 358,000 last month, as far as biggest opening-week sales in 2012. Billboard also notes that Carrie joins Linda Ronstadt and Faith Hill as only the third female country artist to rack up three chart-topping albums on the Top 200.

Behind Blown Away, the Top 10 sees five other debuts this week: Norah Jones‘ Dangermouse-produced fifth album Little Broken Hearts (110,000) enters in the runner-up position, the 42nd NOW compilation (95,000) is #3, B.o.B‘s Strange Clouds (76,000) breezes in at #5, TV tie-in The Music Of SMASH (39,000) starts at #9 and Marilyn Manson‘s Born Villain (38,000) diabolically crashes in at #10.

Meanwhile, following the cancer-related death of Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch on Friday, the trio’s albums sold enough copies collectively (55,000) to make an impact on the Top 200 before Sunday’s weekly chart cut-off time. Jack White has released albums over the past 13 years as a part of The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, but it took the Detroit rocker going solo to finally reach the peak position on Billboard‘s Top 200. White’s LP Blunderbuss sold 138,000 copies out of the gate, enough to land at #1 and bump Lionel Richie‘s former chart-topper Tuskegee (#3, 78,000) off the throne. Billboard notes that White’s previous-best entry on the Top 200 came with The White Stripes’ 2007 LP Icky Thump, which reached #2.

Three other releases debut in the Top 10 this week, in the forms of country singer Lee Brice’s second LP Hard 2 Love (#5, 46,000), fellow country artist Kim Moore’s Up All Night (#6, 37,000 — perhaps he’s a One Direction fan?) and The Wanted‘s self-titled EP (#7, 34,000).

And while some may cite The Wanted’s #7 debut as a victory for One Direction, who recently topped the chart their first week out with Up All Night, it’s best to keep in mind that The Wanted is an EP compiled of singles from the boy band’s two previously-released UK albums, save for two new songs.

We’re just mostly floored that, as Billboard points out, Adele‘s 21 has sold a whopping 3.1 million copies in 2012 alone, and stands at a total of 8.9 million sold since the album’s February 2011 release.

It’s been 12 years since the late Tupac Shakur has appeared on the Billboard 200 chart, but thanks to his virtual resurrection at Coachella this year, the rapper’s album and song sales are also back from the dead. Since his 2D projection hit the stage during the festival’s first weekend (Apr. 15), ‘Pac’s 1998 Greatest Hits release has reappeared at #129 on the album chart, up 571% in sales with more than 4,000 copies sold. “Hail Mary” — Tupac’s last single, released in 1997 off The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory — was downloaded more than 13,000 times last week, up a staggering 1,530% since his CGI effigy opened with it on stage alongside Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. “California Love” and “2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted” also made substantial gains. Maroon 5 have officially dialed up a hit with their Wiz Khalifa pair-up “Payphone”. The sugary pop song sold a whopping 493,000 digital downloads in its first week — enough for it to land at #3 on the Hot 100, just behind Gotye and Kimbra‘s “Somebody That I Used To Know” (which is #1 for a second week) and fun. and Janelle Monae‘s former chart-topper “We Are Young”. Billboard notes that Maroon 5 now have the distinction of racking up the best sales week for a single by a group, a feat previously achieved by the Black Eyes Peas with “Boom Boom Pow” back in 2009. As for the overall artist with the highest sales week for a single, that title belongs to Flo Rida, whose Ke$ha-featuring “Right Round” moved 636,000 downloads in late February 2009. All we can think is, damn, that’s a lot of quarters that went toward “Payphone”. Ba-zingggg!

Lionel Richie easily fends off new releases Jason Mraz, Train and Future on Billboard‘s Top 200 chart this week, as Tuskegee maintains its #1 position following another 114,000 copies sold. As mentioned last week, Tuskegee marks Richie’s first chart-topper on the main album roundup since Dancing On The Ceiling waltzed its way to the peak position in 1986. And the singer’s renaissance has arrived just in time, too, given his recent woes with unpaid taxes.

Meanwhile, it’s hardly doom and gloom for Mraz, whose Love Is A Four Letter Word arrives in the runner-up position on the strength of 102,000 copies sold. It’s now his highest chart position on the Top 200, after previously peaking at #3 four years ago with We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.

Likewise, Train’s sixth album California 37 (#4, 76,000) has now bested the chart positions of 2001′s Drops Of Jupiter and 2003′s My Private Nation, both of which peaked at #6 on the Top 200.

Elsewhere, Pluto, the debut from 22-year-old Georgia rapper Future, enters at #8 (41,000).

Saturday Night Live proved to be not only a winning performance for Gotye with regards to the album chart — his LP Making Mirrors flew back into the Top 10 of the Top 200 this week — but also on the Hot 100 singles chart. The moody “Somebody That I Used To Know” has unseated fun. and Janelle Monae‘s “We Are Young” and becomes Gotye and his duet partner Kimbra‘s first chart-topper in the States. The 31-year-old singer is also now the first Australian artist to top the Hot 100 in the new millennium. (Gotye, whose real name is Wouter De Backer, was technically born in Belgium, but moved Down Under at the age of two.) Thank goodness for bitter breakups.

Lionel Richie may owe the IRS a bundle of cash, but the versatile singer at least has the triumph of a chart-topping album to be thankful for this week. Tuskegee debuted on the Top 200 two weeks ago, behind Madonna‘s MDNA (which had some crying foul). After slipping to #4 last week, the country duets LP has risen to the top of the heap thanks to a boost from CBS’ special ACM Presents: Lionel Richie & Friends In Concert, which aired last Friday.

Tuskegee sold another 129,000 copies over the past week. The LP now gives Richie his third #1 as a solo artist, after 1983′s Can’t Slow Down and 1986′s Dancing On The Ceiling. And, really, you can’t mention “Dancing On The Ceiling” without humming the song, now can you?

Incidentally, Richie recorded a new version of “Dancing On The Ceiling” for Tuskegee with Rascal Flatts, whose own album Changed slips from #3 to #9 on the chart.

Nicki Minaj‘s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded has become her second chart-topping album after posting better-than-expected first-week sales of 253,000 copies. Unfortunately for Madonna, her “Give Me All Your Luvin’” pal bumps MDNA off the #1 spot on Billboard‘s Top 200. And as noted yesterday, Madge’s drop is a record-breaking, steep one — 86.7% to be exact. MDNA fell from sales of 359,000 out of the gate to 48,000 in its second week, which has now caused the album to plummet down to #8 on the chart.

Madonna’s opening-week sales were aided by the fact that concert-goers who purchased tickets to her fall North American tour were given the option of receiving either a physical CD or digital download copy of MDNA. Those who opted for the album therefore contributed to the initial 359,000 total copies sold. But without a hit single dominating the airwaves, it was naturally impossible to maintain the momentum by week number two.

Billboard points out that Madonna has now topped Lady Gaga for the biggest second-week drop in sales of an album in the SoundScan era. Last spring, Gaga’s Born This Way fell 84.27% from its first week (when it sold 1.1 million copies) to second (174,000). That album’s sales were, of course, aided by the Amazon MP3 Store’s now-infamous 99-cent sale.

It is worth mentioning that Madonna, who is currently rehearsing for her tour, has done nearly zero promotion for MDNA, save for a live chat with Jimmy Fallon for Facebook and a couple Twitter fan Q&A sessions.

Sorry, Beliebers. When it came down to it, fun.’s chart-topping single “We Are Young” had enough juice to maintain its position atop the Hot 100 for a fifth week, thus leaving Justin Bieber to debut at #2 with “Boyfriend”. Still, Bieber can be proud of two accomplishments: not only did music buyers snatch up a whopping 521,000 paid downloads of “Boyfriend”, it also marks Justin’s highest-charting solo single on the Hot 100. (Previously, he appeared on 2010 charity single “We Are The World 25 For Haiti”, which also reached #2.) Meanwhile, Bieber’s pal Carly Rae Jepsen crashes the Top 10 (at #10) with “Call Me Maybe”. While we wait to hear confirmation that Madonna’s new LP MDNA will indeed be occupying the peak position on Billboard‘s Top 200, the album has already landed at #1 in several countries, including the UK. Her Madgesty now has 12 chart-topping albums to her name across the pond, and the Official Charts Company reports that the “Girl Gone Wild” singer has  passed up Elvis Presley to become the solo artist with the most #1 LPs.

MDNA marks Madonna’s 12th album, but not all of her studio releases make up her 12 #1s in the UK. For instance, the greatest hits collections The Immaculate Collection and Celebration both topped the chart there, as did the Evita soundtrack. (2001 hits collection GHV2 just missed the mark by peaking at #2.)

Madonna’s three studio albums to not reach the top in the UK? Those would be first LP Madonna (which peaked at #6), 1992′s Erotica (#2) and 1994′s Bedtime Stories (#2).

Like Katniss with one of her razor-sharp arrows, the soundtrack to The Hunger Games took aim at the album chart and hit the bullseye at #1 on Billboard‘s Top 200. The album, which contains such tracks as Taylor Swift’s “Eyes Open” and “Safe & Sound”, sold 175,000 copies in its first week, enough to bump One Direction’s Up All Night (55,000) down to #4 and leapfrog over Adele’s 21 (#2, 130,000) and the debut of The Shins’ Port Of Morrow (#3, 75,000).

Other artists featured on the Jennifer Lawrence-starring film’s soundtrack include Kid Cudi, Maroon 5, Birdy, Arcade Fire, Neko Case and The Decemberists. The Hunger Games grossed a staggering $152.5 million at the box office last weekend, which marked the third-best opening ever (behind Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 and The Dark Knight), and the biggest weekend for a non-sequel in movie history.

Back on the Top 200, Billboard notes that The Hunger Games is only the 16th soundtrack to debut at #1 the chart’s history. The last soundtrack to lead the album roundup was Michael Jackson’s This Is It in fall 2009.

The UK pop invasion continues this week as spaghetti-loving boy band One Direction, who performed on the Today Show last week, capture the #1 position on Billboard‘s Top 200 with their first LP Up All Night. The set sold 176,000 copies, and the lads now have the distinction of being the first UK group to debut atop the US album chart with their first LP. Likewise, the band’s breakthrough US hit “What Makes You Beautiful” has posted a 63% increase in sales from last week. That’s certainly plenty to write home about, and, hey — why not use one of these to do so, guys?

Elsewhere, Adele’s 21 (148,000) is held at bay in the runner-up spot on the chart for a second week, after having racked up a (non-consecutive) 23-week run in the peak position. If the album eventually makes it to the top for another week, Adele will have tied the 24-week stints of both Prince’s Purple Rain soundtrack and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

The only other new entry within the Top 10 is that of the live album recorded by various Christian artists and over 40,000 college students at the Passion 2012 conference in Atlanta this past January. The LP enters at #5 based on first-week sales of 48,000.

Deep breaths, everyone – Adele’s 21 is no longer the #1 album in the country. After 23 nonconsecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard 200, the Brit singer’s hit album finally conceded to Bruce Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball. What do we do with our lives now?!

In all seriousness, though, it was a squeaker — Springsteen’s seventeenth studio album tallied 196,000 in sales, while Adele’s 21 nabbed 195,000. So it’s a victory for The Boss, but just barely.

Of course, Springsteen is used to netting #1 albums — Wrecking Ball marks his tenth chart-topping LP. He ties Elvis Presley for the third-most #1 albums for an artist in history, with only Jay-Z (12) and The Beatles (19) surpassing them.

Had Adele continued her chart-topping dominance this week, she would have been at #1 for 24 weeks, and tied with Prince’s Purple Rain soundtrack. But hey, there’s always next week!

Fun. has Chevy Sonic and Glee to thank for some serious publicity for their single “We Are Young”, as the song has hit #1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100, knocking Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” to #2. The band, which hails from New York City, is the first multi-member rock group in over a decade to have a debut single shoot to #1 on the Hot 100 since Nickelback’s “How You Remind Me” in December 2001/January 2002. WZRD (aka Kid Cudi and Dot Da Genius) land a high debut at #3 with their self-titled album on Billboard‘s Top 200 this week, but the 66,000 copies sold out of the gate isn’t enough to unseat either Adele’s 21 (247,000) from the top spot or Whitney Houston’s Whitney – The Greatest Hits (112,000) from the runner-up position. It’s now the 23rd non-consecutive week for 21 in the #1 position. That’s currently the longest stretch at the top since Prince’s Purple Rain soundtrack managed to stay on top for 24 weeks between 1984 and 1985. Before that, the Saturday Night Fever also racked up 24 weeks in the peak position in 1978.

Billboard points out that 21, which was released 54 weeks ago, is the top-selling album of 2012 after selling 2.07 million copies since January. (Unsurprisingly, the Grammy-winning LP was also 2011′s bestseller.) Right behind Adele in year-to-date sales is Whitney’s Greatest Hits, with a total of 527,000 in sales.
