Justin Bieber could pull off a threepeat when his just-released album Believe hits the charts next week. His previous two releases, My World 2.0 and Under The Mistletoe, both hit the top of the Billboard Top 200. And according to trade publication Billboard, Believe is on its way to achieving the same feat. (Bieber’s very first release, the 2009 EP My World, peaked at #5.) According to industry sources, Justin’s second studio LP could sell between 400,000 and 500,000 copies next week, which would definitely earn it the distinction of having the top debut for an album in 2012.

The highest first-week sales this year, so far, came from Madonna‘s MDNA, which opened with 359,000 copies in early April. Billboard points out that the best sales frame overall in 2012 was the week following the Grammys, when Adele‘s 2011 LP 21 moved 730,000. Do you Belieb Believe can set a new benchmark for the year?

This is crazy, and only because it took so long — Carly Rae Jepsen‘s incessantly covered (for good or for bad) hit single “Call Me Maybe” has now reached the top spot on the Hot 100, with Gotye and Kimbra‘s “Somebody That I Used To Know” slipping down to #2 after eight weeks at #1. This is the first time a female singer topped the charts with her debut single since Ke$ha claimed the top spot with “TiK ToK” in 2010. And let’s hope the similarities between Carly and Ke$ha end there.

Thanks to her primetime NBC special and the plain fact that she’s Adele, the Brit singer’s album sales for 21 raised 30% in the last week, with 75,000 units sold. That not only puts her back on the top of this week’s album charts, but that earns Adele her 24th non-consecutive week at #1 — a phenomenal run that ties her with the soundtracks for Saturday Night Fever and Purple Rain.

There are now only seven albums standing in the way of Adele‘s massively popular 21 and keeping it from having the longest stretch at #1 on Billboard‘s main album chart. And according to the publication, the London songstress’ sophomore LP, which to-date has already spent 23 non-consecutive weeks at #1 since its release last year, is on course for a 24th week in the peak position on the Top 200. If so, this will tie the amount of weeks the soundtracks to 1977′s Saturday Night Fever and 1984′s Purple Rain spent at #1. More »

John Mayer may be voicing up about being hurt by Taylor Swift‘s song “Dear John”, but at least the rocker can find comfort in the fact that his latest LP Born And Raised is #1 for a second week on the Billboard Top 200. The album, Mayer’s fifth, sold 65,000 copies in its second week, thus giving it the dubious distinction of having the lowest amount of sales for a chart-topping record since February 2011, when Nicki Minaj‘s Pink Friday crept to #1 with 45,000. Queen Elizabeth II has reportedly chirped up with her approval for “Sing”, a UK single released to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The track, co-written by Take That member Gary Barlow and Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber and performed by the Commonwealth Band, will open the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert this evening at Buckingham Palace. Ahead of that, Barlow stated yesterday, “When the Queen heard the song, she thought it was great.”

Barlow and Weber wrote “Sing” earlier this year, before the Take That crooner, who also acts as a judge on the UK version of The X Factor, visited remote villages and countries across the world (but within The Commonwealth) to find singers and musicians to perform on the recording. You can see the fruits of his labor in the video above. (And, yes, that’s Prince Harry playing tambourine!) More »

Billboard‘s new Top 200 album chart shows the first full effects of sales of Bee Gees LPs following the death of member Robin Gibb on May 20. (Gibb passed away on a Sunday, which is the day Billboard uses as the cut-off for weekly chart data.) The publication noted yesterday that the Bee Gees sold 27,000 albums in the past week, which is a 339% leap from the 6,000 the trio moved the seven days prior. More »

“Home” is definitely where the heart is for music buyers. Phillip Phillips‘ uplifting American Idol coronation song, which has been lodged in the upper reaches of the iTunes chart since last week’s Season 11 finale, makes an impressive debut at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. This marks the first time an Idol champ has cracked the Top 10 on the chart since 2008, when David Cook‘s “The Time Of My Life” reached #3. (Previously, Scotty McCreery‘s “I Love You This Big” and Kris Allen‘s “No Boundaries” made it to #11, while Lee DeWyze‘s cover of U2‘s “Beautiful Day” limped to #24.) More »

John Mayer can pop a bottle over the fact that the singer-songwriter’s Born And Raised has become his third chart-topping LP. Mayer’s first album in three years debuts atop the Billboard Top 200 on the strength of 219,000 copies sold, and sends last week’s #1, Adam Lambert‘s Trespassing (22,000), tumbling down to #11. This week Adam Lambert made American Idol-related chart history when his LP Trespassing succeeded Blown Away by fellow AI alum Carrie Underwood at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 — a first for onetime Idol contestants. But the hopes of those looking to Kris Allen to pull off a threepeat of sorts with Thank You Camellia are likely to be dashed by the time next week’s chart rolls around.

Billboard has John Mayer‘s latest LP Born And Raised pegged as the next #1, and indicates that industry sources say it could sell upwards of 220,000 copies by the time data is added up. Both Allen’s Thank You Camellia and Haley Reinhart‘s debut Listen Up are expected to crack the Top 20.
