Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Tops Chart With 1.1 Million Copies Sold

June 1st, 2011 // 24 Comments

When all was said and done, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way sold 1.108 million copies out of the gate last week, which was obviously way more than enough for the Rolling Stone cover girl to end Adele’s nine-week reign at #1 on the Top 200 and land her first chart-topping LP on Billboard‘s main tally. (By comparison, Brad Paisley’s ninth album This Is Country Music debuted at #2 on the strength of 153,000 copies sold).

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Projected To Sell Roughly 850K Copies In First Week

May 25th, 2011 // 20 Comments

Adele’s 21 spends a ninth non-consecutive week at #1 on Billboard‘s Top 200 album chart after selling another 137,000 copies. And with only two new releases debuting in the Top 10 — Seether’s Holding Onto Strings Better Left To Fray (#2) and Il Volvo’s self-titled first offering (#10) — it’s rather like the calm before the storm that is Lady Gaga’s Born This Way comes rumbling into next week’s chart.

Adele Maintains Top Position On Album, Single Charts

May 18th, 2011 // 1 Comment

Adele manages yet another week at #1 with 21 on the Billboard Top 200, bring her time at the summit of the main album chart to a grand total of eight non-consecutive weeks. And with 156,000 more copies of her sophomore record sold, she brings to-date sales of the LP to 1.7 million. (As Billboard notes, it’s the only album to cross the million mark so far in 2011). Meanwhile, Adele’s single “Rolling In The Deep” spends a second week atop the Hot 100.

Jennifer Lopez Debuts Behind Adele, Beastie Boys, ‘Now’ In Busy Chart Week

May 11th, 2011 // 1 Comment

This week the upper reaches of the Billboard Top 200 get a spring-cleaning overhaul, as eight new albums crash into the Top 10 and push out artists like Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Foo Fighters and Chris Brown. But let’s get real — that’s hardly enough to dislodge Adele’s sturdy 21, which is the #1 LP in the country for a seventh non-consecutive week after selling another 155,000 copies.

Adele Extends Album Chart Reign To Six Weeks

May 4th, 2011 // 1 Comment

Billboard reports that Rolling Stone cover girl Adele sold another 124,000 copies of this year’s breakout hit LP 21, enough to keep her safely lodged in the #1 position on the Top 200 for a sixth non-consecutive week. There are no new entries in the Top 10, and the only noteworthy factor about the new chart is that 21 is now tied with Taylor Swift’s Speak Now, Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed A Dream and Norah Jones’ Feels Like Home for female solo albums that have spent six weeks at #1 over the past decade. Only one female solo LP has racked up more time at the top in that period: Swift’s Fearless (11 weeks).

Which Of Rihanna’s 10 #1 Singles Is Your Favorite?

April 21st, 2011 // 22 Comments

Who knew that when Rihanna scored her first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping single with “SOS” back in 2006, she’d be achieving her 10th #1 in just under five years? (Check out her music video style evolution!)  Ri Ri’s “S&M” had been stuck at #2 for a few weeks, but with Britney Spears’ vocals added to a new remix of the chains-and-whips-wielding dance-pop anthem, it finally inched up to the top on the new chart published today.

Foo Fighters Bump Adele Off The Top Of The Album Chart

April 20th, 2011 // 1 Comment

Adele’s nonconsecutive run at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart is interrupted once again. This time around it’s Foo Fighters who knock the Rolling Stone cover girl off the top, with their seventh LP Wasting Light (235,000 copies)—an album recorded in frontman Dave Grohl’s garage. Believe it or not, this marks the first #1 album for the long-lasting alt rock band.

Adele Tops The Album Chart For A Fourth Non-Consecutive Week

April 13th, 2011 // 2 Comments

After selling 88,000 more copies of 21 last week, Adele returns to #1 on the Billboard Top 200, thus bumping Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale (75,000) down to #2. As predicted, 21 moved just enough copies to cross the 1 million mark, making it the first album to do so in 2011. Only two new albums dent the upper reaches of the new chart—Hollywood Undead’s American Tragedy (#4) and Asking Alexandria’s Reckless & Relentless (#9). See how the rest of the Top 10 played out below.
