New Jersey wannabe Bard Jon Bon Jovi is one of the majority owners of the Philadelphia Soul, the City Of Brotherly Love’s team in the high-scoring, low-regarded Arena Football League. Or was, anyway: Reports (including one from the Facebook wall of another AFL team’s president) are claiming that the league, which had already suspended its 2009 season, is shutting down for good. In case you were planning a power-pop road trip out east that included a stop at Fountains Of Wayne, the Wayne, N.J., outdoor shop that inspired the name of Adam Schlesinger’s beloved band, you may want to reroute: Thanks to a difficult Christmas season last year, the store—which had been run by the same family for more than 40 years—closed in March and was subsequently liquidated. “Vibe,” R.I.P.
Vibe, the urban-culture magazine founded by Quincy Jones in 1993, is ceasing publication, according to media reporter Jeff Bercovici (who confirmed the news with an assistant to editor-in-chief Danyel Smith). The mag had announced that it would be reducing its publication schedule, adding a gossipy offshoot, cutting workweeks to four days, and raising subscription prices earlier this year. Songsmith-focused magazine Performing Songwriter is shutting down production after its next issue. The magazine had been publishing for 16 years, and according to publisher and founder Lydia Hutchinson, it was completely ad-supported for the entirety of its existence, and it wasn’t about to let a sour economy change that: “By ceasing publication now we know the magazine will never risk losing its integrity and or its quality. All of us here are grateful for this journey, and feel like we’ve crossed the finish line with our heads held high.” [Music Row] MORE »

Dotshop, a Scandanavian wholesale and online retail specialty music store, is closing down. The announcement blames it on decreased sales due to piracy, and makes an eloquent plea that seems to take another poke at The Pirate Bay: “pirates have hi-jacked concepts that are too important to be misused the way they are: democracy, freedom, bright future. These entities, it seems, are beyond their grasp and comprehension, as they truly have absolutely nothing to do with piracy.” Writes a reader, “The Pirate Bay gloats and one of the best Scandinavian distros/stores closes. Now I’ve gotta find someone else to sell our wares.” [Dotshop] MORE »

“Blender,” R.I.P.
Alpha Media has shuttered its music magazine Blender, according to Ad Age. Ad pages for the musically omnivorous, list-happy mag had gone down some 57% between January and April of this year, one that’s proven rough going for glossies of all stripes. Blender editor Joe Levy—who came to the mag from Rolling Stone a little more than a year ago—will move over to Alpha’s lone remaining title, Maxim, where he’ll become editor. (Disclaimer: I wrote a few record reviews for Blender long ago.) UPDATE: Press release announcing the changes at Alpha—including Levy’s job-switch and the news that Blender.com will “continue as a digital destination”—after the jump. [Ad Age] MORE »

Times Square To Lose Its Virginity This April
Well, the day that we’ve all been expecting has been penciled into the calendar: The Times Square Virgin Megastore, the multi-floored music retail outpost/tourist attraction which this writer has spent a lot of time/money in and which has in recent weeks hosted appearances by the likes of Fall Out Boy and Constantine Maroulis, is closing its doors come April.
