Don’t Go Calling Roxanne Shanté A Doctor Yet

shanteFile under things that are a bummer for multiple reasons: The New York Daily News story about Roxanne Shanté exploiting a clause in her contract with Warner Music Group and getting the company to fork over $217,000 toward her education—which went all the way to Ph.D. level–from a few weeks ago? Well, it’s apparently not based in anything resembling fact, according to an exhaustive investigation by Slate. Shanté—neé Lolita Gooden—admitted to Slate freelancer Ben Sheffner with an acknowledgement that she didn’t have a Ph.D, so anyone calling her a “doctor” is off the mark. (She still claims to have a master’s degree from Cornell, but Sheffner couldn’t even find evidence that she’d earned a bachelor’s degree.) And now the author of the Daily News‘ original story is nowhere to be found! Ugh. The full list of findings: MORE »

vampireweekendA reader in the know let me know that, contrary to Hits‘ assertions, Vampire Weekend’s second album will not be coming out on Sept. 29—in fact, it’s not slated to come out until sometime in 2010. However, what is apparently coming out that day: the Where The Wild Things Are soundtrack featuring Karen O and her pals and a bunch of kids. Tradeoff? [Pause & Play / Earlier] MORE »

saysaysayAs one of our commenters noted: There was no mention of Paul McCartney getting publishing rights to the Beatles catalog in the Michael Jackson will released yesterday, which would seem to contradict earlier reports about Jackson deciding to leave him those rights upon his death. (Something tells me that more to this story will come out eventually, but for now, the fact is duly noted.) [Previously] MORE »

“New York Times” Doubles Up On Inaccuracies Regarding R. Kelly

We missed the headline –”A Swaggering Rap Storyteller Unleashing His One-Track Mind”–that inspired the above correction thanks to the holiday, but we’re guessing that this little mix-up means curtains for Michelle Malkin’s tenure as a holiday-weekend Times copyeditor. MORE »

My numbers may be off, but doesn't R. Kelly refer to himself as "60% R&B/40% Hip-Hop" on "Blow It Up"?

At Least The Post Spelled ‘CBGB’ Right

First the New York Times confuses Clash members Mick Jones and Joe Strummer–and the New York Post, in its rush to engage in some Times-mocking, runs a picture of Foreigner’s Mick Jones. Now, the Post can’t tell the difference between Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry and Patti Smith. MORE »
