Would You Pay $2,000 For A Signed Print Of The “Nevermind” Cover?

Next month, Christie’s is hosting an auction entitled Punk/Rock, in which memorabilia from the Sex Pistols will mingle with the likes of signed Van Halen picture discs and a print of the Nevermind cover that’s signed–in gold pen!–by Kurt, Kris, and Dave. (It’s supposed to go for $2,000-$3,000. Um…) Of course, much ado is being made about the Pistols items in the auctions, because even though they’ve done their damndest to piss on their legacy and set it on fire over the past few years people still think they Kind Of Mean Something To Music. But there are a few other items that those of you with disposable income and an appetite for music geekery might enjoy: MORE »

Interesting timing. I have to imagine the memorabilia market is not terribly hot right now.

Live Nation’s Latest $10 Ticketing Day: Long Island Metalheads, Where Have You Gone?

5139637.jpgContinuing its fun practice of temporarily discounting concert tickets in the hopes of getting butts into its venues’ seats, Live Nation has sent out an e-mail to New York-area mailing list subscribers touting its “Summer Concert Stimulus Package,” which cuts the ticket prices for select shows to $10 for one day only and which I would have called the “Business Sucks Sale,” because, c’mon, that’s a lot funnier and more honest. (And here’s the obligatory note that the “convenience” charges added to the tickets after the fact nearly double the listed price, but that little piece of info isn’t any fun to pass along, now, is it?) Among the shows are the Slipknot-headlined Mayhem Festival, which also includes Mastodon and Underoath on its bill; Judas Priest shows at both Jones Beach and the PNC Bank Arts Center; some sort of Opie and Anthony-sponsored “comedy” show; and bills that include both Poison and Sebastian Bach. The full list of shows after the jump. MORE »

The "Travelling Virus" is just a bunch of stand up comedians who get to do their act in front of (hopefully) a couple thousand people in front of just a couple.

Hate the guys, but I give them credit for trying to give stand ups a leg up -- although that means that it's mostly stand ups who match their particular style of humor.

James Brown’s Auction Attracts The Curious, The Hairstyling Historians

d5099301l.jpgLast week’s auction of James Brown’s belongings at the auction house Christie’s sounds like it was a pretty depressing affair, with a few C-list sightings (Paul Shaffer, Nicky Hilton, DJ Shadow) and a lot of malaise. The sale had been projected to bring in some $2 million, but all the items wound up fetching half that–$857,688, according to The New York Times. Brown’s children Yamma and Larry told the Times‘ Guy Trebay that the auction marked a “sad day” for the family, thanks to every item on the bill being forcibly sold no matter what price was offered and the likelihood of one collector buying up all the items and making them the cornerstone for a James Brown Memorial Museum being slim to none. There were, however, a few items that brought in surprisingly high dollar amounts. MORE »

If You Want A Piece Of Lou Pearlman, You Can Find One On eBay

AP061027035494.jpgPervy boy-band impresario Lou Pearlman, whose trial on federal bank fraud charges is set for April, has told friends that he’s thinking about copping a plea on those charges that would result in him going to the federal pen for up to 25 years. But that doesn’t mean he’ll be free from jail after that; charges related to the huge investment scheme that he ran through his company Trans Continental Airlines have yet to be filed, and that’ll probably add to his sentence if he’s found guilty. What’s more interesting: The “friend” who told the St. Petersburg Times this little bit of news is now reselling Pearlman’s possessions–which he bought at Pearlman’s two bankruptcy auctions–on eBay, under the username a-v sales. Among the items on offer are an actual MTV Moonman (bidding currently at $560); other highlights–including an award bestowed upon Pearlman by Mikhail Gorbachev–after the jump. MORE »

Fake Record-Collection Buyer Speaks, Claims That Someone Spoofed His Login

The eBay user who placed the $3 million-and-change bid on Pittsburgh-area record collector Paul Mawhinney’s three-million-record library is now claiming that he was a victim of identity fraud, and that he had no idea that his account on the auction site had been used to make the winning bid. Huge Record Collection’s Alleged Buyer May Be Getting Some Very Negative eBay Feedback Soon

The eBay user jopsoup–who won the gigantic record collection that was up for auction there with a $3,002,500 bid–has a curious addition to his favorably rated profile: He’s now noted as not being registered with the site. What does that mean? MORE »

@Tenno: The problem is, this guy has tried to sell this collection a couple of times already to museums and the LoC. No museum has this kind of cash. Off the top of my head, I can't really picture what museum this would fit in with anyway.

Three million is a lot of scratch, especially for something that is going to require so much space and time and effort to manage. I'm trying to manage my own collection of just a couple thousand 12" and it's a pain in the ass. I can't even imagine what this would be like.

As I said other thread, I respect the guy's situation (failing health, wanting to leave something for the kids) but if he wants to keep this collection together, he's going to have to donate it. Who has the money, time and space for a beast like this?

Also, I'd like to know where the $50 mil estimated value comes from. That's about $17 an item for this collection. I find that hard to swallow. And seriously, anyone else seen the market for music lately? It's in the crapper all the way around.

Huge Record Collection Sells For $3 Million And Change

2-1.jpgThe library-sized record collection that went on sale via eBay earlier this week has found a buyer, although the collection, which includes more than three million pieces, didn’t quite fetch the $50 million that owner Paul Mawhinney had been hoping to get. In fact, the final price didn’t inch much further past the $3 million reserve that Mawhinney had set with eBay, although the collection’s final price of $3,002,150 is one of the highest selling prices in eBay’s history. Details on the person who’s claiming to have $3 million on hand are sketchy: He lives in Ireland and goes by the name of jopsoup, and he has 97.1% positive feedback. And it would seem that he’s used eBay to buy music-related items before, although none of his purchases have been this big (not to mention expensive to ship across the Atlantic). MORE »

@Jfrankparnell:
I know we Irish folk have gotten all rich and what not off the Celtic Tiger (or so we're told!), but me thinks this is a case of someone chancing their arm! The buyer details would point to someone who doesn't have three million squid in their pockets, wonder if he/she will get a book deal out of it!?

How Much Would You Spend For Six Million Songs? (Hint: $50 Million May Not Be Enough)

2-1.jpgIn case you were wondering just who owned that six-million-song music collection that’s currently listed on eBay with a starting price of $3 million: Meet Paul Mawhinney, an obsessive music cataloger and record-collectors’-guide publisher who also owned the Pittsburgh-area shop Record-Rama. In a 2003 profile of his business, he was quoted as saying “Almost all the guys out on the front line of the music business are all conniving to get what they can.” And given his past history of deals where he’s almost made some cash from his collection, it’s easy to see why he feels this way!
