Carrie Underwood was her usual sweet self on The Tonight Show last night singing “Temporary Home,” the latest single from her crescendo-rific album Play On. We’re actually surprised Conan didn’t have on a band from the New Moon soundtrack, since it was apparently Twilight night with Bella Swan herself, Kristen Stewart, as the main guest and Cody Devereux, Conan’s vampire assistant, making an appearance. So we’re thankful for Carrie’s pitch-perfect performance (and playful knocking of Kanye West) sans vampire references. We needed a breather. MORE »

Shakira Performs Song, Humps Air, Sports Dreadlocks on Letterman
Another day, another super hot but kind of creepy thing Shakira does with her body. Shaks (we’re on a nickname basis) performed “Give It Up To Me” on Letterman last night, showcasing her usual body contortions, but with one new addition: dreadlocks. Not totally digging the new look, but I bet even her hair is double-jointed, so who am I to judge.
Shakira, unfavorable hairstyle or no, always looks great, but I have to admit, I prefer her much more like this: MORE »

Eric Cartman Nearly Redeems “Poker Face”
I am not a fan of Lady GaGa’s ode to keeping her lack of sexual satisfaction secret by any stretch (we all remember Daughtry’s version, yes?) but… this running joke from last night’s South Park made me split my gut and almost like the track. Sadly, searching “cartman poker face” on iTunes brings up a “sorry” screen. Culture industryyyy-yyyy! [YouTube / South Park Studios; thanks for the YouTube link go to Sam Adams] MORE »

Remind Christina Aguilera Of The “Dirrty” Era At Your Own Peril
Last night’s Project Runway featured pint-sized belter Christina Aguilera as a guest judge, where she was given the task of figuring out which designer would best create a sequin-and-feather-heavy stage look for her. (Thanks to corporate tussling, it’s somewhat stale; Xtina was flogging her Target-exclusive greatest-hits package Keeps Gettin’ Better at the time of the taping a year ago.) The winner put together a gorgeous black gown festooned with feathers and sequins, while the rest of the field was, shall we say, less successful. Sure, nobody broke out a pair of glittery assless chaps, but one contestant tried to make Christina go “punky”—and his fabric-light look led to many a disparaging “Lady Marmalade” reference. (Damn garters!) Clip above. [Lifetime] MORE »

?uestlove Gets Dragged To The Bright Side Of Life
Above, The Roots and Eric Idle collaborate on the Monty Python hit “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life” on last night’s all-Python edition of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. If you’re one of those people whose ears burst into flames when people whistle simultaneously but off-pitch consider yourself warned (hey, I know a few people who have that affliction), but otherwise, this is pretty charming, and had me bopping along in my seat. I’m actually shocked that the Internet didn’t explode the minute this clip was put online—it has so much to offer the geek niche! What is wrong with you, information worker bees? “The Office” Breathes Life Into Chris Brown’s “Forever” One More Time
Chris Brown better send someone at NBC a fruit basket, because last night’s (oddly vacillating between super-awkward and super-saccharine, in this reporter’s opinion) wedding episode of imported Britcom The Office revived the whole “wedding procession that uses ‘Forever’” meme for the purposes of allowing the cast to wackily dance down the aisle. How has America responded to this reappropriation of this summer’s hottest nuptially related YouTube meme? With their mouse-clicking fingers! “Forever” has re-entered the iTunes charts once more; it currently sits there at No. 32—one spot below the troubled singer’s aggro new single “I Can Transform Ya.” A clip of the dancing, after the jump. Madonna And Lady GaGa Attempt To Justify Their Love Of Being In The Spotlight
Last night, Madonna continued her recent tradition of passing torches to up-and-coming pop stars via an appearance on Saturday Night Live in which she blessed Lady GaGa with her jealousy and confusion. The two were ostensibly guests on the dance-music-centric Deep House Dish, although mainly having the two of them share a stage was little more than a way to set up a retread of the “Catfight!” episode of Seinfeld, only with more PVC. Also, this reporter felt like the collective listlessness of Madge and GaGa when they first appeared was a weird sort of homage to Britney Spears’ hot mess of a Video Music Awards performance in 2007. (Starting any somewhat-awkward dance-pop performance with a closeup of ratty blonde hair kinda starts things off on a weird foot, no?) Clip after the jump. MORE »

Madonna Goes For A Slice
Last night Madonna was on Late Show With David Letterman, and after being carried into the Ed Sullivan Theater by a phalanx of New York Rangers and confessing to Dave that she’d had a little bit of herbal assistance the last time she was on the show, she accompanied the host to an adjacent pizzeria for what she claimed was her first-ever slice inside an actual New York pizzeria. Initially I wanted to call bullshit on this claim, but then she had her slice accompanied by a martini, so who knows—maybe she only ate Chinese in her early New York starving-artist days. Judge for yourself after the jump. MORE »

Megadeth Comes To Jimmy Fallon, Leaves Its Sound Guy Somewhere Outside
I was going to write “what better way to start off the Friday of the first post-summer workweek than with some Megadeth,” and while the Dave Mustaine-led metal outfit’s performance of “Head Crusher” from their just-out-this-week album Endgame has some pretty amazing guitar work, the vocals are mixed in a way that leaves something to be desired. Still, the opening riff sounds pretty great, and it certainly put a jolt into my Friday morning! Clip after the jump. MORE »

Susan Boyle Comes To America
Last night, Britain’s overnight singing sensation Susan Boyle appeared on America’s Got Talent, the Stateside analogue to the show that shot her to stardom a scant few months ago. She performed her cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” ably, but what was more fascinating was the pre-show package about how exactly she got to this spot, from the shots of a love-struck Simon Cowell to her loss on the show and the tabloid headlines about her checking into the Priory Clinic to now. The woman has lived an entire episode of Behind The Music over the course of one summer! Clip after the jump. MORE »
