Manu Dibango Would Like Rihanna And Michael Jackson To Stop The Music (Until He Gets Paid)
Cameroonian singer Manu Dibango has filed suit in a French court against Rihanna and Michael Jackson for copyright infringement, saying that he wasn’t consulted about the use of a sample in Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop The Music.” The sampled bit was the breakdown from Jackson’s 1983 single “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”—which itself was a reworking of Dibango’s 1972 track “Soul Makossa,” a usage for which Jackson was compensating Dibango. He’s reportedly looking for 500,000 euros’ worth of compensation for the new usage, although the judges in France won’t let him know whether or not his lawsuit can go through until Feb. 17. After the jump, the three tracks in question. MORE »

Joe Satriani May Give The Grammy Red Carpet A Little Something Extra This Sunday
Joe Satriani’s copyright-infringement lawsuit against Coldplay—who, the guitarist claims, ripped off his song “If I Could Fly” on the Grammy-nominated title track from their Grammy-nominated album Viva La Vida—is still supposed to proceed, but there’s been one problem: The process servers who are supposed to serve Coldplay with the j’accuse outlining the terms of the lawsuit haven’t been able to catch up with Chris Martin and his merry men just yet. So what’s a lawyer to do? How about unleashing those process servers on a splashy red-carpet event that his client’s target is sure to be at, thanks to said target maybe picking up a boatload of awards that evening? MORE »

Your CD Of “Tha Carter III” Just Became A Collectible
One of the two copyright lawsuits facing Lil Wayne has been settled, with the delightfully litigious music publishers at ABKCO winning out over Weezy and producer StreetRunner in a battle over whether or not the two borrowed heavily from the Rolling Stones‘ “Playing With Fire” on their track of the same name. Billboard reported that all sides were pleased with the settlement, which I assume involved some amount of money as well as the removal of the track from future copies of Tha Carter III as well as the virtual shelves of online stores. (For better or worse, the track will be replaced with the wonderfully titled David Banner production “Pussy Monster.”) The two tracks, after the jump. MORE »

John Landis Is Not All That Thrilled With Michael Jackson
“Thriller” director John Landis is suing still-sorta-iconic pop singer Michael Jackson for breach of contract, saying that he hasn’t been paid for his share of the “Thriller” video for at least the last four years. When the clip was signed in 1983, Landis and Jackson brokered a deal that said the director would get 50% of the net profits from the video and its related documentary, and that he would also receive regular updates on the video’s revenues. Landis’ suit, which accuses “fraudulent, malicious and oppressive conduct” on the part of Jackson and his people, says that Jackson’s been breaching that agreement since at least 2005. MORE »

Juggalo Throws Book At Violent J After Getting A Little Too Much Faygo Tossed His Way
An Insane Clown Posse fan is suing the half of the horrorcore duo who goes by the name Violent J, as well as a venue in Fargo, N.D., after sustaining injuries during a 2007 show thanks to an errant two-liter bottle of Faygo that got thrown into the teeming masses of Juggalos rushing the concert’s stage. John Antonelli is looking for at least $50,000 from Violent J and the venue after suffering a fractured bone near his right eye. MORE »
