Memorial Day Playlist: 12 Patriotic Songs That Pop

May 25th, 2012 // Leave a Comment

Memorial Day is next Monday (May 28), and while most of us are just stoked to get the day off work, the holiday is actually intended to honor the good men and women who’ve fallen in battle, in service to the United States. To pay tribute to them, and to keep your Memorial Day barbeque poppin’, we’ve compiled a list of 12 patriotic songs  that are so the opposite of those downer tracks that usually come to mind when someone says “patriotic songs.” Nope, there are no amber waves of grain and definitely no “Born In The USA” on this soundtrack, just a dozen uptempo tunes about heroes and the good ol’ US of A. Grab that iTunes gift card and head below to see our picks. More »

Her Grammy-winning sophomore LP 21 is sailing back toward the top of the US album chart — for a 24th non-consecutive week, mind you — so it makes sense that Adele, who landed three #1 singles in the past year, would top The Sunday Times Rich List 2012 for wealthiest musicians under 30. The 23-year-old “Set Fire To The Rain” songstress beat her fellow chirping countrywomen to the top by amassing a fortune of £20 million, which, when converted to dollars, comes out to about $31.8 million.

Nicki Minaj Joins Long Line Of Pepsi Faces: Watch 7 Classic Pop Star Soda Ads

March 19th, 2012 // 1 Comment

That sound you hear in the distance is some cha-ching mixed with a little super bass. Nicki Minj is the latest music star to sign with Pepsi Co. — a multi-million dollar deal, Forbes reports — and the “Starships” songstress is set to be the face of the company’s new soda brand Pop. The first commercial, which was shot recently in South America, should arrive within a few months. But all this pop talk has us reminiscing about Nicki’s “Give Me All Your Luvin’” pal Madonna’s own Pepsi commercial — you know, the one that got pulled due to its tie-in with her controversial “Like A Prayer” video in 1989. And then there were Michael Jackson’s own ads for the company. And Whitney and George Michael’s shills for Diet Coke. Oh, just jump below and watch all the fizzy pop goodness from the days of yore!

It is, of course, far too early too decide. (Besides, many minds are still mush after Jay-Z’s Amex Sync Show last night). And so we’ll instead take a look back at the acts that made a ruckus here at SXSW one year ago then went on to ride that buzz to bigger success afterward. Head below for a recap on what Foster the People, Miguel, Neon Hitch, Oh Land, Tyler The Creator and Wiz Khalifa have been up to since their gigs in Austin in March 2011.

February 27th, 2012 // 2 Comments

Last night, the 84th Academy Awards honored the best in film, but it’s often the worst movies that we find the most entertaining. And our favorite type of terrible movie? Pretty much any flick a pop star graces with their presence. Sure, there are exceptions — like Justin Timberlake shining in 2010′s The Social Network, or Cher winning an Oscar for her work in 1987′s Moonstruck — but even if we love the performer, we don’t always love the films they star in. We’ve picked the Top 13 bad movies featuring fourteen pop stars who really should have been picker when choosing projects.
