JT Does Something Old, Something New

It’s good to be Justin Timberlake in 2013. With a musical comeback attempt that really could have gone either way, given the long hiatus — and, trust, with 1.5 million copies of The 20/20 Experience sold in just over a month, plus two Top 5 hits off the record dominating radio, it’s going the right way — the world’s most time-taking pop star is making sure to hit all the right marks, promotion-wise, and the real winners here are the fans who’ve been missing JT for the past six-plus years.

Timberlake’s latest public appearance came courtesy of an intimate MasterCard Priceless Premieres gig at New York’s Roseland Ballroom on Sunday (May 5) evening. (Well, intimate by Justin Timberlake standards — the sold-out venue housed 2000 screaming, dancing, giddy and drunk MasterCard holders.) Perhaps as an artistic acknowledgement of his long absence from the live stage, Justin and his full band of “Tennessee Kids” opened not with a new song from his latest album, but rather his very first solo single, “Like I Love You.”

Other JT “classics” (I guess we can call them that at this point, right?) mixed in included “What Goes Around…Comes Around” (watch above), “My Love,” “Senorita,” “Cry Me A River,” “LoveStoned,” “Summer Love” and “SexyBack,” with Timbaland sauntering on stage for the latter (watch below). More »

Mariah Carey At Sydney’s All Phones Arena: Concert Review And Exclusive Photos

January 4th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

The last time Mariah Carey put her high heels on Australian soil, she was promoting a little album called Butterfly. That was back in 1998, when Mimi ruled the charts and airwaves with an iron fist. While her star still shines as bright as ever, the future American Idol judge has spent the last few years concentrating on family rather than chasing hits. Not that Australia seems to have noticed. Despite the 15-year leave of absence, MC’s show at Sydney’s All Phones Arena sold out in four minutes. Other dates were subsequently added, and the pop legend suddenly found herself on a mini-tour instead of the originally-intended sunny vacation. More »

Rihanna promised a rock and roll adventure with her 777 Tour, and the chart-conquering vixen wasn’t bluffing. Day one kicked off with the “Diamonds” diva herself surprising the 150 or so journalists (including yours truly) and 30 fans on the jet in Los Angeles by walking up and down the aisles and greeting everyone. Cameras flashed, video crews hopped to their feet and, naturally, there was a chorus of “shine bright like a diamond” that broke out among the passengers.

I should point out that this early flurry of excitement was all before the aircraft even took flight. RiRi then hopped on the PA system and announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, we have an emergency — it’s called 777!” More »

CMJ Music Marathon 2012: Icona Pop Light Up Santos Party House

October 19th, 2012 // Leave a Comment

Listening to Icona Pop from a speaker or headphones feels more than adequate: The Swedish dance-pop duo’s pummeling beats and celebratory lyrics make them the party soundtrack everyone can agree on. But the experience of seeing them live is incomparable, if only because their production style is so electrifying. Flashing beams of neon light penetrated the dark room as the girls — Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo — performed last night (October 18) at Santos Party House, where they played as part of Neon Gold’s New Shapes showcase for CMJ 2012. Their show was like the coolest disco you’ve never been to.

Their lead single “I Love It” was an obvious highlight, but then again, everything they performed from their most recent Iconic EP was thrilling. “A big thanks to the guy who broke my heart — I fucking love it!” Hjelt yelled at one point. So do we.

CMJ Music Marathon 2012: Sky Ferreira Rocks Out At Santos Party House

October 19th, 2012 // 1 Comment

Sky Ferreira has gone through so many incarnations in her career that it was tough to know what to expect from her performance last night (October 18) at Santos Party House in New York City for Neon Gold’s New Shapes CMJ 2012 party: Polished pop princess? Twee indie darling? Snarling rocker? Last night’s set positioned her squarely as the latter, with the singer performing a tight set that was soaked in distortion and muscular guitars.

Platinum blond Cousin It hair obscured Ferreira’s face, and her mien was sulky and apathetic, but in a likable way. Two previously unheard tracks from her forthcoming album showed a rockier edge, Ferreira nearly screaming over the roaring guitars; the final song, “Sad Dream,” taken from her Ghost EP, was a gem of elegantly expressed heartbreak. In the crowd, fans chanted “Sky or Die! Sky or Die!” More »

CMJ Music Marathon 2012: MS MR Dazzle At Bowery Ballroom

October 19th, 2012 // Leave a Comment

“We’re gonna get a little Alanis Morissette on you for a minute,” explained the lead singer of MS MR halfway through her set. “But only in terms of bitchy vibes.” Indeed, the New York-based alt-pop duo, who are midway through their fall tour with Grouplove after spending the summer opening for Marina & The Diamonds, packed major attitude during their October 18 performance at Bowery Ballroom for CMJ Music Marathon, from the lyrics soaked in vitriol and frustration (“I still think of you and all the shit you put me through” went the refrain of one memorable song), to their surprisingly smoky and soulful vocals. The songs they performed, some taken from their recent string of EPs and others from their forthcoming debut album due via Columbia Records in 2013, were as dark and portentous as Florence & The Machine but unweighted by the high-concept theatricality. Azealia Banks’ Mermaid Ball Splashes Down With Charli XCX, Robyn & Rye Rye In Los Angeles

July 16th, 2012 // Leave a Comment

“Let’s celebrate the aquababes,” Azealia Banks demands on her recently released Fantasea mixtape — and what better way to pay homage to Banks’ recent infatuation with all things under-da-sea than to host a party fit for a mermaid queen?

That’s exactly what the 20-year-old rapper did Saturday evening at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood with her Mermaid Ball. Riding the wave of buzz following a wildly successful New York incarnation of the show, Banks transformed the otherwise inconspicuous venue into an underwater party paradise overflowing with a mix of mermaids, sailors, seapunks and drag queens all donning elaborate homemade costumes.
