Beyonce’s “Grown Woman” Leaks: Listen To The Full Song

May 20th, 2013 // 3 Comments

Finally! Whether it’s to distract from the (apparently false) pregnancy reports, or just because Beyonce was sick of people harping about her ubiquity being paired with a dearth of new music, somebody has posted new Beyonce music. Yes, “Grown Woman” has hit the Web, and we can finally hear how it sounds in full, separated from Bey’s ultra-fierce Pepsi ad.

It’s a frenetic, globetrotting dance track with a tribal rhythm, chants and a descending bass line that sounds like a sped up version of the one in Justin Timberlake‘s “Pusher Love Girl.” A feisty Bey declares “I can do whatever I wawnt,” and that includes giving us a song that sounds nothing like what anyone was expecting. It’s almost like this track is destined to be the theme song to the next Women’s World Cup or something.

“Grown Woman” was reportedly co-written by The-Dream and produced by Timbaland. Hear it below, and then check out the song’s lyrics. More »

The-Dream Duets With Kelly Rowland On “Where Have You Been”: Listen

May 20th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

The-Dream produced Kelly Rowland‘s much-discussed single “Dirty Laundry,” and now Rowland returns the favor with her feature on Dream’s new song “Where Have You Been.”  Borrowing the classic R&B duet formula, the song (which will appear on his upcoming album IV Play) is a smooth ballad about a rocky relationship. The-Dream explained the song to Rap-Up, saying that it’s “just a signature R&B duet record, no games, no nothing, straight down the middle. It was a chance for me to bond with another friend now that I have, which is Kelly.”

In addition to making great music together, The-Dream and Kelly Rowland will be co-headlining the “Lights Out Tour” (if Kelly doesn’t bail on the whole thing for her X Factor judging duties, that is) — which kicks off on May 23, the same date that IV Play is set to drop.

In July, T.I. is hitting the road with Lil Wayne and Future for their America’s Most Wanted Festival, and the tour’s two alpha dogs teamed up for “Wit Me” to give fans a taste of what they can expect this summer. Over a spacey, syrupy beat, Weezy starts things off with a chain of clever couplets (“If niggas thinkin’ I’m soft / I’ll knock your thinking cap off”), then Tip turns in a typically propulsive verse. And then they both re-up for round two.

Cassadee Pope’s “Wasting All These Tears”: Hear Her (Amazing) New Single

May 20th, 2013 // 3 Comments

The Voice has proven more consistently entertaining than its competition, but the show has yet to produce any huge stars from its winners’ roster; am I wrong for thinking all that might change with Cassadee Pope? The Season 3 winner’s new single has just been released, and “Wasting All These Tears” is an instantaneous monster of a pop-country midtempo ballad, delivering shades of Avril Lavigne‘s “I’m With You” with the melodramatic production of Carrie Underwood‘s “Two Black Cadillacs.” Lyrically, it’s magic — the details are finely wrought (“Tried to find you at the bottom of a bottle / Laying down on the bathroom floor,” she sings by way of an opening) and the chorus melody (“Standing on the corner crying / Feeling like a fool for trying”) soars majestically. Chris Brown’s “They Don’t Know”: Preview The Aaliyah-Sampling Single

May 19th, 2013 // 1 Comment

Chris Brown has released a snippet to “They Don’t Know,” the X single that samples previously unreleased vocals from the late Aaliyah. Based on the preview, Brown doesn’t deviate far from its source material.

“They Don’t Know” borrows from Digital Black‘s “Don’t Think They Know,” from his 2008 album Memoirs of an R&B Thug. Digital Black was one of three members in ’90s R&B group Playa, whose members (Static Major especially) worked with Aaliyah in addition to Ginuwine, Missy Elliott and Jo Jo. Timbaland had also produced Playa’s 1998 debut, Cheers 2 U. Hear Brown’s take after the jump. More »

Jay-Z And Drake Hit The Studio Together

May 19th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Drake‘s found yet another reason to thank Jay-Z later. As reported last night, he hit the studio with the Roc Nation CEO for their first collaboration since “Light Up,” off his 2010 debut. “Warning: Please be very afraid of the music we’re working on. OVO x ROCNATION,” a Roc Nation photographer posted to Instagram.

In the Thank Me Later track,  Drake rapped of how his friends were partying, but he was making the music they party to — “I got these new rappers nervous / prom night, n—-” — before a pissed-off Jay warned him of how fame can turn ugly: “Not as cool of a n— as I once was, these bright lights turned me to a monster.” Revisit the track after the jump. Janet Jackson Preps First New Music In Five Years

May 19th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Janet Jackson sees our desire: Days before her fifth album janet. celebrates its 20th anniversary, the enduring pop diva announces that she’s prepping her first new music in five years. “We are creating the concept and initial thoughts on the music,” she says to Billboard. “I am excited about the direction that we’re taking.”

At this point in planning, the possibilities for Jackson’s new music seems endless. Her most recent album, 2008′s Discipline, had debuted at No. 1 only to fall swiftly from the charts, but it’s hard to ignore that she’d replaced long-time producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis with a wide array of still-relevant collaborators, including Darkchild, Stargate, Rodney Jerkins, Tricky Stewart, and The-Dream. Jessie J Teases New Single “Wild”

May 18th, 2013 // Leave a Comment
"Wild" In The Studio

“If I go hard, let me tell you that it’s worth it / Play the right cards, I-I-I ain’t afraid to work it,” Jessie J sings in her new single “Wild.” On Thursday the Voice mentor previewed the song with a clip of her studio session, in which she added final touches to her pop plea.

Heartbeats are still left to ponder over a lyric that Jessie J teased along with “Wild”: “Everything starts with a WISH but everything can be real.” (No, her new album isn’t titled Wish — as if it would be that easy.) In the meantime, Jessie J promises that “Wild” and its video will drop soon, both featuring G.O.O.D. Music’s Big Sean and fellow U.K. resident Dizzie Rascal. Watch the clip up top. More »

Kanye West Debuts “New Slaves”: Watch

May 18th, 2013 // Leave a Comment
(Kanye's) Writing's On The Wall

“I’d rather be a dick than a swallower,” Kanye West raps in “New Slaves,” a song he debuted Friday night. West premiered the song in 10 different cities by projecting a clip onto 66 different buildings, a video of him staring straight ahead. The rapper was calm, but his words were harsh.

“New Slaves” brings West’s February gigs in London to mind and how, to the tune of “Clique,” the G.O.O.D. Music honcho mocked corporations (“I can’t give a fuck about your comments, I promise, I promise”) as he rambled of the Grammys, “the whole Beyonce thing” and Jay-Z‘s cameo in Justin Timberlake‘s “Suit & Tie.” To the spare beat of “New Slaves,” West hits harder at the same target.  More »

Our favorite part of American Idol is always that final moment when the winner is all verklempt and overwhelmed and forced to sing his or her (finally, this year, her!) winning song live under completely surreal circumstances. That’s the best part of the season, isn’t it? It’s why we let them put us through so much bloated programming leading up to that moment. So last night (May 16), Candice Glover was crowned our newest winner of Idol, and we got to see the her smile and cry her way through her coronation song, “I Am Beautiful.”

But as warm as that made us feel inside, we wanted to hear the real track, and now we’ve got it! The studio version of Glover’s official single doesn’t offer up any surprises — her vocals soar over the clean production — but it’s a solid showcase of the newest Idol’s talents. Hear the empowering track below. More »
