The Saturdays’ “Gentleman”: Hear Their Weird (But Cool) New Single

May 8th, 2013 // 2 Comments

Well, it’s been quite a wild ride chasing The Saturdays on their E! reality show Chasing The Saturdaysand now, it seems, they’ve been chased into a very curious corner with their new single “Gentleman.” It’s weird, right? Weird in some ways that are mostly good and also potentially terrible. I’m not entirely sure yet.

First up: It’s a funky little tune, with a spoken-word bit that evokes Girls Aloud (not the first time and probably won’t be the last), built around the following largely inexplicable hook: “A gentleman is so 1995 / So hard for a girl to find / A real husband so 1999 / So hard for a girl to find.” Sonically, it has some jazzy flavor, but in a diffuse, madcap kind of way; it sounds like it belongs to a school of Mark Ronson retro-soul revivalism that already came and went a few years ago. Big Time Rush: Hear New Song “Picture This” & See Cher Lloyd In This Week’s Episode

May 8th, 2013 // 19 Comments

While Season 4 of Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush kicked off last week, this Thursday’s (May 9) episode has a bit of extra star power. Everyone’s favorite hockey-players-turned-boy-band spend some air time with none other than “Want U Back” songstress Cher Lloyd. Idolator is premiering stills from tomorrow’s show, which airs at 8 p.m., as well as a snippet of BTR’s song “Picture This,” from their forthcoming album 24/seven.

Kendall, James, Carlos and Logan worked with such songwriters and producers as The Suspex, Claude Kelly, Matt Squire and Matt Thiessen on 24/seven, which the quartet will promote via their nationwide, 38-city Summer Break Tour. The jaunt kicks off, appropriately, on June 21, with fellow Nickelodeon music act Victoria Justice on the bill as opener.

Head below to hear a snippet of “Picture This” and see another photo of Cher Lloyd in this week’s episode of Big Time Rush. More »

Jennifer Lopez & Pitbull’s “Live It Up”: Listen To The Obvious Summer Smash

Jennifer Lopez Pitbull "Live It Up" Lyric Video
Hashtag Live It Up

Here’s the good news about the new single from walking bronzer advertisement Jennifer Lopez and her bestie, predatory pair of aviator sunglasses with the world’s shiniest head Pitbull: Despite what J.Lo been tweeting (and the first visual in the lyric video), this song is called “Live It Up,” not “#LiveItUp,” as we’d suspected, which spares us some “#Beautiful”-level indignity.

And as it turns out, the song itself is as thrilling as highly derivative dance-pop gets: A monstrous summery club smash produced by RedOne that follows in the footsteps of “On the Floor” and “Dance Again.”

Yes, the moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here: “Kisses Down Low” songstress Kelly Rowland has finally unveiled the very stripped-down cover art for her highly anticipated fourth album Talk A Good Game.

The R&B diva is no stranger to showing some skin (then again, with a body like that, why should she be?) Riding off the success of her steamy hit “Ice,” Ms. Kelly looks hot and ready for the new era. More »

New Kanye West: Hear Snippets Of Two Seemingly Finished Tracks, Care Of Hudson Mohawke

May 7th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

While Kanye West was playing dress-up and performing new song “I Am a God” at the Met Gala last night (May 7), his production protege Hudson Mohawke was giving the masses a dose of new Yeezy, too. At an event the same night, the Scottish DJ-producer rolled out two apparently finished West tracks. And, no surprise here, they sound ridiculously dope. Head below to hear the snippets. More »

Glass Theory’s “Hard To Breathe”: Idolator Premiere

May 7th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Glass Theory, the brainchild of musician-producer Jack Duff, is based out of L.A. but his night grooves give us a decidedly New York feel. His snappy drum machines and glassy synths conjure images of too-cool scenesters in asymmetrical dresses and slim suits at some Meatpacking lounge you’ve never heard of. Needless to say, that vibe is right in our wheelhouse, so we’re excited to premiere the title track from his forthcoming Hard to Breathe EP.

“Hard to Breathe” has some house hallmarks, but rather than unfurl like a dance trance, there’s an icy jolt here that makes everything pop. It’s like a dance remix of a pop song that never existed (which makes sense, since Glass Theory remixed Blondfire‘s “Where the Kids Are” a few months ago). Duff self-produced the song and enlisted Alex Aldi (Passion PitHoly Ghost!) to mix it. And you can head below to hear it. More »

About 16 years have passed since 98 Degrees released their self-titled debut album, and 15 years since their follow-up 98° and Rising became a multi-platinum juggernaut. A lot has happened since then. Mainly, the concept of a boy band has actually evolved into just that: a boy band. When Nick, Justin, Jeff, and Drew first hit the scene, they were all in their twenties (Drew was probably the closest to genuine youthfulness at 21). It wasn’t unheard of, considering various members of Backstreet Boys were flirting with 30 by their second album. Since then, boy bands have gotten younger (One Direction‘s oldest member is 21 and they’re almost three albums deep), yet the content grows more risqué. Capitalizing on one of those two traits, 98 Degrees release 2.0 (out today,

The media narrative on Victoria “Little Boots” Hesketh’s sophomore album, the one in which an artist gets pushed down by the heavy hand of the modern music industry…that story ends here. Because it doesn’t matter. In a year, no one will remember the delays or the lengths to which Hesketh went to make sure she realized her own vision. What they will remember is simple: Nocturnes (out today, ) is a solid work of cinematic, nighttime disco. More »

MS MR’s ‘Secondhand Rapture’: Stream Their Debut Album & Hear Chvrches’ “Hurricane” Remix

May 6th, 2013 // 1 Comment

Over the weekend, two of our favorite emerging alt-pop projects joined forces, as synth-pop trio Chvrches turned out a great remix of MS MR‘s already great “Hurricane.” Scotland’s electro experts took the original’s slow-burn gloom and somehow warped it into a chipper, ’80s-style dance-pop gem, and now Lizzy Plapinger‘s foreboding vocals sound more like the calls of a dance commander. It’s surprising and clever beyond mere novelty, making it exactly what a good remix should be.

You can hear the reworked track below, but first — more MS MR news! The duo’s debut album Secondhand Rapture is out next week (May 14), and you can stream the LP in full over at Hype Machine right now. More »

Demi Lovato’s ‘Demi’: Stream The Full Album

May 6th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Demi Lovato earlier today tapped into the power of the Lovatics to unlock the songs from her forthcoming album Demi (out May 14). The more people who tweeted the hashtag of each song title, the faster that song would be unlocked. So here we are about three hours later, and the full album has been unveiled for your streaming pleasure.

Lovato’s vocal acrobatics are in full effect on the album (there were more than a few Christina Aguilera comparisons being thrown around our office as we listened), and there are a variety of different styles on display. The thumping electro-drama of “Heart Attack” and the earnest bounce of “Made in the USA” are just two of the many sides the singer shows off on Demi, which you can listen to here.
