Celine Dion Teases New Album: Hear A Song Snippet

April 30th, 2013 // 4 Comments

Sing It, Cel!

We’re starting to get a better picture of what’s in store for Celine Dion‘s forthcoming album. In addition to a duet with Ne-Yo, the record will include credits from British producer-songwriter Eg White, who has worked with Adele on both of her albums. As our on-the-ball commenters pointed out, in the above teaser Dion sings part of “Water and a Flame,” originally a duet between Daniel Merriweather and Adele, and which shares the working title of Dion’s album. Does that mean we’re getting a covers album? Begin the speculation. More »

Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love” Gets A Flapper Remake For ‘The Great Gatsby’: Hear Emeli Sande’s Cover

April 30th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Beyonce and Andre 3000 put together a lurching, polarizing cover of Amy Winehouse‘s “Back to Black” for The Great Gatsby, and whatever your thoughts on the song, we can promise you the latest cover from the film’s soundtrack won’t be nearly as controversial. Bey submitted her own hit to the cover treatment, with Emeli Sande and the Bryan Ferry Orchestra transforming “Crazy in Love” into a jazzy ’20s jaunt.

This version is a fun little exercise in period homage. In fact, it works so well that it’s hard to believe it took this long for somebody to notice how perfectly Bey’s circular melody translates to talk-y trumpets and a stand-up bass. We’re going to assume Baz Luhrmann will use the song as flapper girls do the Charleston at one of Jay Gatsby’s extravagant soirees. Hear the cover below. More »

With “Miss America” and “Power Trip,” J. Cole has given fans a very promising sample of his forthcoming album Born Sinner (out June 25). But with his latest, “Cole Summer,” he declares, “This right here’s not a preview / Of what the album gon’ bring you / Or nothing like that.” But just because it’s a one-off track doesn’t make it any less compelling.

We went into the song sort of hoping it sampled Bananarama‘s “Cruel Summer.” That is not the case. But it does sample Lauryn Hill and D’Angelo‘s “Nothing Even Matters,” and Cole pleads, “Miss Hill, please don’t sue me,” probably well aware that Miss Hill could use a little extra dough right about now. The song combines a gently rattling, soulful beat with a looping vocal sample. Along with the introspective lyrics, it all reminds us of early Kanye West, before he became an evil genius. Little Boots’ ‘Nocturnes’: Stream The Full Album

April 30th, 2013 // Leave a Comment
Little Boots Nocturnes

Here are a few things that we love about Little Boots’ sophomore LP Nocturnes: It’s elegant but it never feels too polished; it’s lo-fi yet never dull; it’s laden with razor hooks and sharply crafted melodies without feeling like it’s baiting mainstream radio (the pitfall of her debut album, Hands); and really, it feels like the album that the buzzed-about British songstress was meant to make. Expect a full review upon its formal release next week, but for now, take note of the lush ambient swirl of opening track “Motorway,” the laid-back pep of “Confusion” (penned with Lady Gaga‘s “Born This Way” collaborator Jeppe Laursen) and the nu-disco waves of “Crescendo,” which plays like a lost Kylie Minogue classic. The tracks run long, but they’ve earned the space to breathe. So has Little Boots. Stream Nocturnes in full over at Pitchfork Advance.

Chris Brown Announces ‘X’ Release Date, Drops “I Can’t Win” Track For Fans

April 30th, 2013 // 2 Comments

R&B’s favorite Snidely Whiplash impersonator and generally upsetting person Chris Brown took to Twitter last night to announce the release date of his upcoming album Xwhich hits retailers July 16. This is great news for Team Breezy, but not-so-great news for those of us who just don’t have the constitution for another round of endless promotional appearances characterized by empty contrition and mediocre music, the jaw-dropping circus of watching putatively intelligent and principled journalists congratulating him for not being a complete monster as he tweets smoke-hazy Instagrams with Rihanna that fill us with a queasy, portentous dread. Can’t wait.

The “Fine China” crooner also shared the link to a new track just for fans, tweeting, “Some shit I felt like writing that’s not on the album.” Sure! More »

LL Cool J rose to fame through a series of firsts. In his 1984 debut single “I Need a Beat,” the scrappy and still-teenaged MC laid his braggadocio down to a precise, hard-hitting backbeat — production that the LP’s label described as “Reduced by Rick Rubin.” LL’s debut Radio became one of hip hop’s first commercially successful albums. “I Need Love” was the first rap song to be a #1 R&B hit. LL paved the way for Eminem and Drake by becoming one of the first rappers to achieve pop stardom. Yes, he was also accused of selling out.

But the more the mainstream paid attention to rap, the bigger the genre grew. So, for most of his 13-album deal with Def Jam, LL Cool J chased after rap’s most notable sounds and names, from West Coast-style rap reporting (14 Shots To The Dome) to Timbaland (The DEFinition). For 14th album Authentic (out today, April 30), LL has enlisted funk forefathers (Bootsy Collins), ’90s R&B stars (Seal) and Snoop Dogg, upon his own Reincarnation. Based on the tracklist, Authentic appears to be another first — that is, his first decisively retro affair. More »

98 Degrees’ “Girls Night Out”: Hear The New Track

April 29th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

98 Degrees are — uh, how do we put this? — horny. The guys are horny. There’s no getting around this fact. Their comeback single, “Microphone,” was a not-so-veiled ode to oral sex, and their latest single, “Girls Night Out,” finds them declaring “So many women lookin’ good in the place right now… I want that girl and that girl and that girl.”

OK so the lyrics may be a little clunky, but the song is ultra-smooth, with that same understated electro sleekness of Carly Rae Jepsen‘s “This Kiss.” Hear the song after the jump. More »

Australian rapstress Iggy Azalea has been making serious waves: The Wilhelmina model/Grand Hustle muse signed to Island Def Jam last week in addition to inking a deal with Mercury for her UK distribution. Impressive, but not as impressive as her new single “Bounce,” released this weekend, which pairs the fiery raps for which she gained popularity with a club-friendly house beat that’s the most commercial thing we’ve heard from her to date — more so even than the trappy “Work.” Here, she evokes a nastier Ke$ha, spitting, “Shake it, break it, make it bounce,” over a pounding beat.

The lyrics are party-happy, uncomplicated fun: “Let ya hair down and shake that shit / Sweat it out, go nuts in this bitch / Dip it, spin it, and watchin’ my hips / I see you watchin’ my hips / Crazy, move your body like Swayze.” World: Meet your new twerk anthem. Listen after the jump. More »

Pink Announces “True Love” With Lily Allen As New Single

April 29th, 2013 // 2 Comments
Pink True Love Lyric Video
Fall In Love With Pink & Lily

Having nabbed another #1 single with her Nate Ruess collab “Just Give Me a Reason,” Pink is sticking with the formula by releasing another song with a guest spot from a critically adored singer-songwriter: the Lily Allen-assisted ”True Love,” a maddeningly catchy standout from her 2012 LP The Truth About Love

According to Digital Spy, the single was announced last week at an RCA label showcase in London, and it’s a canny move for Pink: ”True Love” belongs more to the “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)” school of snarky pop-rock than it does to her more emotional side — as showcased on “Try” and “Just Give Me a Reason” — so it’s probably a good change of pace; lyrics like, “At the same time, I wanna hug you / I wanna wrap my hands around your neck / You’re an asshole, but I love you” are as groan-inducingly Pink as they come. Allen’s cult following, too, should help buoy interest in the track.  More »
