It’s been a minute since we’ve heard new material from Chvrches – although, to be fair, they’ve held us over with a cover of the Game of Thrones theme and a MS MR remix – but now we’ve got a proper new track from the Scottish synth-pop trio. “Gun” is yet another instantly gratifying morsel of bright synths, chipper ’80s dance pulses and sneakily emotive lyrics. As always, Lauren Mayberry‘s vocals are frosty yet welcoming, but this time there’s the addition of some M83-like background ooohs from her male counterparts near the end.

“Gun” will be released as a single on July 15 in the UK. No word yet on whether it’ll appear on the band’s forthcoming full-length. Hear it below. More »

Sneaky Kylie Minogue is no stranger to dishing up surprises around Memorial Day (or, probably more relevant to her given that she’s not a US resident, her birthday, which is today, May 28). Last year it was “Timebomb,” a top-secret single she’d been keeping under wraps for her Best Of Kylie Minogue compilation. And in 2010 the Aussie pop goddess premiered her “All The Lovers” video on the holiday, in the lead-up to the summer release of her Aphrodite album.

This time around we’ve all awoken from the three-day holiday weekend to “Skirt,” a slightly dubstep-tinged and somewhat minimal club track that some sites note was co-written by The-Dream (whose IV was released today) and produced by Nom De Strip.

Nobody makes a sex record better than The-Dream, and the appropriately titled IV Play is all about sex. Not much else but that. Just sex.

That’s cool: It’s worked for him for awhile, and on IV Play, in stores , it still does. At the same time, though, there’s something odd about the fact that a songwriter who’s obviously capable of writing enormous, and versatile, hits for superstars like Beyonce, Rihanna and Mariah Carey would keep his own work so narrowly focused on a subject that, while certainly titillating, doesn’t tend to reveal greater meaning as it’s endlessly retreaded, as it is on this album.

His tunnel-vision isn’t a bad thing, necessarily — if anything, it makes for a record that’s more focused and cohesive than previous efforts. But at a certain point, even baby-making jams start to feel stale. More »

Adam Lambert Performs New Song “Love Wins Over Glamour”: Watch

May 26th, 2013 // 8 Comments
For Adam, "Love" Trumps All

“Love was far out of sight, I was unsatisfied, I wanna do it right, I need to love tonight,” Adam Lambert sings in “Love Wins Over Glamour,” a song written exclusively for Saturday’s Live Ball in Vienna. The Trespassing star debuted the song while dressed as Ali Baba, in part of the charity gala’s Arabian Nights theme.

Lambert’s overcoat and turban glittered under the stage lights. His backup dancers parted as he struted right through. “Open sesame!” he yelled, before he turned to outstretch his arms, commanding a curtain to draw and revealing even more dancers ready to entertain. Given the night’s theme, plus a fashion show by Roberto Cavalli, Lambert’s performance was indeed a bit glamorous. More »

Selena Gomez Previews Next Single “Slow Down”

May 26th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Based on a six-second preview, Selena Gomez wants to pump up the volume with her next single “Slow Down.” In a rehearsal video, likely for her forthcoming Stars Dance tour, backup dancers strike poses as the song plays. “… even though I’m ready for it, for it, for it,” Gomez sings as the song builds.

With current single “Come & Get It,” Gomez dropped hints for weeks of how the song could sound. One preview revealed a bhangra beat and chant, while another gave away the song’s bridge.

Gomez has yet to reveal any more details of “Slow Down,” including a release date. For now, check out her brief clip after the jump. More »

Hear Jennifer Hudson’s New Song “Gone, Gone, Gone”

May 26th, 2013 // 4 Comments

Jennifer Hudson has released her first new music in two years: “Gone, Gone, Gone,” a ’90s R&B throwback in which Hudson commands attention and reclaims her independence from an unappreciative beau.

“So I’m gone / like the rent you done spent up, at the strip club with your friends, buying them dollar dances,” she sings. “I’ll be gone / like the job you had last week, like the promise you don’t keep, like the dealer took your Jeep.”

Before Hudson signed on to return to American Idol as a judge, she hit the studio to begin recording her follow-up to 2011′s I Remember Me. Hudson has yet to reveal other details or even link “Gone, Gone, Gone” to her new album, but here’s to hoping she has more to share soon. For now, hear her new song after the jump. More »

Jessie J’s “Wild”: Hear Her New Song And Preview Her Video

May 26th, 2013 // 1 Comment
"Wild" In Black And White

Right as she finishes her new album, Jessie J released her new single “Wild” in its entirety. While revealed as a thumping anthem to resilience, “Wild” also holds true to expectations that Jessie J would show off her agile and powerful voice — even if at the expense of others.

When the Voice mentor previewed the track, she only revealed her own vocals and not the rap flavor that Big Sean and Dizzee Rascal promised to add, yet showed much promise. In its entirety though, “Wild” feels exhilarating when Jessie J and Dizzee Rascal deliver, yet falls flat when Big Sean delivers his clunkers of verses, comparing the competition to piranhas and promising to emerge with a fish dinner.

Fortunately, while “Wild” itself isn’t perfect, its video still holds potential. In a black-and-white preview, Jessie J’s heels clack as she struts through an empty warehouse, before close-ups of her fierce gazes and outfits flash onto the screen. Check out her video preview up top, then hear “Wild” after the jump. More »

Diplo took a break from posting about Daft Punk‘s Random Access Memories to put together a Major Lazer remix of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘ “Can’t Hold Us.” Macklemore’s rapping takes a backseat here, with Ray Dalton‘s vocal melody now the centerpiece. Underneath the vocals you’ve got Major Lazer’s trademark squiggly synths and drum machine claps. While it’s not as revelatory as that “Thrift Shop”/”No Scrubs” mashup, it’s still a solid dance reinterpretation.

Kendrick Lamar Joins Quadron On “Better Off”: Hear The Sultry Track

May 23rd, 2013 // Leave a Comment

It’s looking to be a big year for Danish duo Quadron. Singer Coco O. appeared on the Great Gatsby soundtrack and Tyler, the Creator‘s Wolf, while producer Robin Hannibal recently saw success as a member of smooth R&B project Rhye. But now the two are focused on Quadron and looking to capitalize on their respective momentum for their forthcoming album Avalanche. And for that record’s first salvo they’ve dropped “Better Off,” featuring Kendrick Lamar.

Coco recently stopped by our New York office and told us initially K-Dot  approached them to be on his album. But after hearing some Quadron demos, he was hooked, and agreed to do a verse on one of their songs. The result is the album’s only feature, and “Better Off” is a laid-back groove with some velvety vocals and horns underpinning Lamar’s whispered verse. Head below to hear the sultry collaboration.  More »

Janelle Monae Guests On Goodie Mob’s “Special Education”: Listen

May 22nd, 2013 // Leave a Comment

We’re still obsessed with Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu‘s “Q.U.E.E.N.” and we see no sign of the obsession fading any time soon. But we’re greedy, so we still want to hear more new Monae. While we’ll still have to wait for another taste of The Electric Lady, we do have some new Janelle in the form of a feature on Goodie Mob‘s “Special Education.” We all remember how Monae’s last guest spot turned out, so this was a wise move by Cee Lo Green and his Atlanta rap crew.

While it’s highly unlikely this song will see the success that fun.‘s “We Are Young” enjoyed, it’s still a solid summer banger. The verses are grinding electro rap, almost reaching Skrillex levels of squelching, then Monae turns in a breathy, British-accented chorus extolling the virtues of being your unique, weird, special self. Think of it as a companion piece to 2 Chainz‘s “I’m Different.” Hear it below. More »
