Michelle Williams Talks ‘Unexpected’ Follow-Up at SESAC Pop Awards

May 14th, 2013 // 1 Comment

There are plenty of music events devoted to showering our favorite pop stars in awards — from the Grammys to the Billboard Music Awards. The SESAC Pop Awards, on the other hand, are an annual celebration of the talented players behind-the-scenes, including the industry’s finest songwriters, producers and executives.

This year’s ceremony, which was hosted last night at the New York Public Library, saw acts like Danja, Swizz Beatz and Omarion picking up awards for their contribution to pop music over the past year.

We got a chance to chat with Michelle Williams, who was on hand to present Rico Love with the Songwriter of the Year award, about her upcoming album. More »

Daft Punk’s “Lose Yourself To Dance”: Hear Pharrell’s Other ‘Random Access Memories’ Track

May 13th, 2013 // 3 Comments

OK so the full Daft Punk album has finally been unleashed upon the world (in streaming form, at least). These are exciting times! And you should definitely listen to the whole thing straight through before you start plucking out single tracks. But! We want to isolate one track in particular for now — “Lose Yourself to Dance” — because it’s the album’s other track with Pharrell (the first, of course, being lead single “Get Lucky”).

This cut shares many of the hallmarks of that single: a talk box, Nile Rodgers‘ crystalline guitar lines, Pharrell’s appealingly thin falsetto. But for us, at least, everything comes together in a more compelling package here. Whereas “Get Lucky” sounded classic, this sounds like classic Daft Punk. That’s our first impression, anyway. 2 Chainz, Chris Brown, A$AP Rocky, Miguel, Kendrick Lamar & More Join Hot 97 Summer Jam

May 2nd, 2013 // Leave a Comment

This year marks the 20th annual Hot 97 Summer Jam, a staple of hip-hop that’s been around since the days when festivals largely ignored the genre and instead catered to bearded dudes noodling away on their guitars for interminable jam sessions. While Summer Jam isn’t as essential to rap fans now thanks to the vast options at festivals across the country, it’s still a landmark event for the genre every year.

Summer Jam XX takes place June 2 at MetLife Stadium with 2 ChainzKendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Miguel, Chris Brown and more, plus Wu-Tang Clan will continue the reunion that started at Coachella last month. Pretty solid lineup, but there’s a rather conspicuous dearth of females on the roster — perhaps it’s fallout from last year, when Peter Rosenberg slammed Nicki Minaj and the Young Money crew pulled out? Considering it’s the 20th anniversary, though, there are bound to be more names and special performances thrown into the mix, so there’s hope yet for the femcees and their fans. Win Tickets To See Enrique Iglesias Perform At A Private Concert In New York City

May 2nd, 2013 // 67 Comments

On May 14, Enrique Iglesias will play an intimate showcase at Terminal 5 in New York City for Univision’s H2O Private Concert Series. It’s closed to the general public — but we can be your hero, baby.

The King of Latin Pop is still riding high off of his latest single “Finally Found You,” “”Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You),” and of course, 2010′s massive smash, “I Like It,” which Idolator readers voted as the Song of the Summer that year. Would you like to see him croon his classics up close, in a theater of no more than 1,400 people? Here’s how. More »

President Obama’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner: He Talks Jay-Z, References Taylor Swift

April 28th, 2013 // 8 Comments
99 Problems, And Jay-Z's Now One

President Obama‘s relationship to pop culture is simple: He uses it to to disarm the public and reach beyond the politicians and otherwise Very Important People sitting before him. Every nod to rap still feels as revelatory as his 2008 Democratic primary speech and reference to Jay-Z‘s “Dirt Off Your Shoulders“; it says that he still sees minorities, youth and other overlooked sectors of the population.

Now five years later, at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, President Obama showed that pop-friendly charm offensive — or, political campaign used to win supporters — hasn’t changed. This year, he moved on from referencing Young Jeezy‘s “My President Is Black” to DJ Khaled‘s “All I Do Is Win.” (“How do you like my new entrance music?” he asked, to an otherwise quiet crowd.) He also addressed Jay-Z and Beyonce‘s recent, controversial trip to Cuba, and addressed the hip-hop royal couple in a way that no other politician would have. More »

Lady Gaga Is Godmother To Elton John’s New Son

April 27th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

“We’re all bonkers in this business, but you know, we’re human beings at the same time,” Elton John said on Friday, when he revealed that Lady Gaga was named godmother to his second son Elijah. Gaga is already godmother to John’s first-born son, Zachary.

“I think she’s a great role model. She’s young. I admire everything about her,” he told Extra. “She’s been a great godmother so far to Zachary.”

After Elijah’s birth in January, Mother Monster flew to Vegas to see John’s Caesar Palace show. Beforehand, she met up with John and saw Elijah for the first time. “She was already dressed to go to the show, and she was sitting there and she bathed him. She was dressed like Audrey Hepburn,” John said. Watch his Extra interview after the jump. More »

Selena Gomez Announces “Stars Dance” World Tour: See The Dates

April 15th, 2013 // 1 Comment

Selena Gomez has announced her first-ever world tour, “Stars Dance.” The 56-date trek begins August 14 in Vancouver and ends November 27 in Fairfax, Virginia, with a pre-sale for select dates starting April 17 at 10 a.m. local time.

For those who missed her live debut of new single “Come and Get It,” Gomez broke down to Ryan Seacrest how she approached this tour. “I kind of missed shows when it used to just be about the dancing and the performing, as opposed to how big and elaborate the stage is,” Gomez said, citing Britney Spears and Janet Jackson as her personal favorite performers.

Come and get it, indeed. Check out the “Stars Dance” stops after the jump. More »

“I know you guys voted your butts off, it’s all good. We love you, and we’re going to continue doing music,” Emblem3 said on The X Factor‘s Season 2 semifinals. They were just outvoted by Carly Rose Sonenclar, but as further evidenced this morning, they were eager to move on. Today the Simon Cowell-trained trio released their debut single “Chloe (You’re the One I Want)” — a song about a girl, yes, but also wanting what most consider to be second best.

“Chloe,” in this case, is a girl with a hot sister. Fortunately, Emblem3 have their hearts set — “You think she’s got it all, but that don’t make her better / You got my heart, and that’s the only thing that matters” — just like their voters from last sesaon. Hear their new song after the jump. More »
