Though these Dubliners somewhat amusingly claim to merge rock (or rather, whatever wimpy music silly Irish people erroneously classify as rock) with “hip hop lyrical flow,” their self-titled Phonogenic catapulted up to No. 19 on the Heatseekers chart last week; the £6.99 iTunes price listed on their MySpace page was presumably not a major factor, but every little thing counts. Clearly they are following in Celtic soul-brother footsteps previously laid down by Thin Lizzy and Black 47 and House of Pain and people like that. “Think U2 versus Timbaland, Van Morrison remixed by Teddy Riley,” their bio on MySpace says, and their fans contribute comments written in cryptic Dublin hip-hop lingo: “Alri lads wats d story??,” goes one. “Was doin me business midterm test d oda day nd der was a question on break-even analises r sumfin nd wen i just saw breakeven ur song was n me head n i cudn concintrate, twas gas, i distracted nearly every1 else 2, am auctaly listening ta breakeven now lol!” MORE »

ohGr Plays With Celebrities, Capitalization
You can tell that ohGr is an extremely creative and artistic band because of the presence of a capital letter in the middle of its name instead of at the beginning, sort of like t.A.T.u.; also, one band member is named cEvin Key, which makes the band seem even more creative and artistic. ohGr’s new Devils in My Details (SPV) tumbles to No. 147 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart a week after entering at No. 18 (and spending a week at No. 9 on the Electronic album chart); one MySpace friend calls it “a bit darker and ominous than the other ohGr albums,” suggesting those earlier ones were perhaps all happy and sunshiney. 12:00 PM on Tue Nov 25 2008 i think you missed the point of the song. it's not attacking m&m or nin directly, it's attacking the middleclass alternayouth that bankroll the corporate appropriation of rebellion or the impulse for change(geez I'm pretentious :P). I don't know what his attitude toward the artists is, but I don't imagine he would think that Trent Reznor is so clueless as to actually think he is what his image says he is. And yeah, your dismissal of Skinny Puppy pretty much tells everyone how ignorant you are--not that I am a fan of either. But really, Skinny Puppy was a very influential and yes groundbreaking act. I guess you had to be around in 1982 to know how unique they were. Listen to Ministry from 1982 and you'll know what I mean.

Deadmau5 Builds A Strobe-Lit Trap
“In this world of ever evolving genres, sounds and trends, the word phenomenon is rarely if ever used,” Deadmau5’s bio unreliably asserts. Except in the case of, uh, this clearly phenomenal fellow, whose new album on Ultra, randomly titled Random Album Title, entered the Heatseekers chart at No. 65 last week, then dropped off this week. (His Clockwork EP did debut on Hot Singles Sales at No. 17 in its stead, though.) Very informative explanation of his music, from his Wiki page: “Deadmau5 (pronounced ‘Dead mouse’, birth name Joel Zimmerman) is a Progressive house and Electro house musician and DJ from Toronto, Canada. His extensive discography includes tracks such as ‘Arguru’ and ‘Not Exactly.’” Got that? You may call him Mau5y, you may call him Zimmy, but you’re gonna have to serve somebody. MORE »
12:00 PM on Fri Nov 21 2008 As much as I wanted to dislike Deadmau5, because of his association with Tiesto (....UGH.) and Sasha (Eh...), I can't say the music ain't good. I got Random Album Title a few weeks back and most of the album is good. Some are definitely jams and can be used in a lot of varied DJ sets. Deadmaus5 definitely should release 12"s, but he should also broaden his horizons a little more, because this could be amazing if he crosses a genre or two in the electronic field. Just, please...no more Tiesto involvement.

Lesley Roy Is Going… Into The Embrace Of Dr. Luke And The Viper Room
“Avril Lavigne crossed with Melissa Etheridge a Psycho Bitch?,” asked an intriguing headline at antimusic.com a few months back; unfortunately, this referred to no particular psycho-bitchy activities accomplished by this extremely blonde pop-singing 21-year-old Dublin pop-singer’s daughter, but a mere song title. But Lesley Roy is still young, so don’t write her off yet. Her $7.99-on-iTunes Jive debut album Unbeautiful debuted at No. 128 on Heatseekers this week, a month or so after it officially hit stores. The title ballad, meanwhile, racked up its eighth week on the Pop 100 chart, where it’s now at No. 71; back in June, her comparatively less boring “I’m Gone, I’m Going” did just about equally well at the same format, reportedly after being played on The Hills. 12:00 PM on Tue Nov 18 2008 Man, I've been waiting for her to release something for about 4 years. She was working with Scott Weiland at some stage, I seem to remember.

We Search MySpace For Electroclash Revivalists, Second-Rate Sublime Disciples, And Will Ferrell Homages
Each week, dozens of songs and albums from up-and-coming (or just plain unknown) bands debut on the world’s music charts. Some of these bands will never be heard from again; some may become the next little thing. That’s why we have Chuck Eddy exploring the world beyond the Billboard 200, where he’ll look for diamonds in the MySpace rough. This week, his roster of up-and-comers includes some gentle Scripture rock, a new animated guise for some of the Gorillaz, the Talladega Nights fan at left, and a former Dial MTV staple who’s back in a newer, rougher guise. 10:00 AM on Fri Sep 19 2008 Wow, I thought it was a big deal when you gave VNV nation a shout out, but now you've got Cruxshadows and Oomph in the same post. Sheesh, what am I reading Side-Line here? As a crumudgenly rivet-head, it's nice to see some discussion of the industrial (that's what I call that stuff, guess the kids call it dark wave...but even I'm to young for the moldy phrase "Electronic Body Music"). Cruxshadows' Cassandra is a great song...if a little fey an melodramatic, but then again, you don't really get to be picked last during PE by listening to the top of the pops... I don't even know what I'm talking about.

10:00 AM on Fri Sep 5 2008 @CapnCalamity: hay gurl hay, who u b? My username is… the same there, actually. I don't mind "Poker Face" actually, if only for "bluffin' with my muffin", which is one of the funnier things I've heard and takes me back to the glory days of the Sugababes and "Easy" - but in principle, and because of the pronounced awfulness of the two Martin Kierszenbaum tracks, I can't stand her. There's something really distasteful about her entire aesthetic to me; it comes off as a forced attempt at something, I don't know what, that's veered off into tasteless kitsch without her noticing at all.

10:00 AM on Fri Aug 22 2008 Full disclosure: The Peytons are friends of mine. They played in my back yard for my 30th birthday and let me use their vehicle to haul some drums around once. That said, Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band is a hell of a lot of fun. They've been one of the bands from here I've been happiest to see blow up and their live show gets better each time I see them. Lest anyone think the gut bucket blues thing is an act, Josh Peyton will talk your ear off about pre-war blues. Thanks to him, I checked out Charlie Patton, and my life is richer for it. PS- It's Washboard Breezy, not Betty.

11:00 AM on Fri Jul 25 2008 Wow, that Lee Brice song is just amazingly awful. Can't wait for Pt. 2 when the "lottery winner curse" kicks in and he's singing about the methlab in his basement, how his relatives robbed him blind and that all he has to show for it now is a mink fur-lined toilet seat and a horse with the American Flag tattooed on it.
